Hi Peeps,

Thought I'd introduce myself, and my bike.  I just picked up an amazingly nice (to me anyway) Commencal Premier Pro, in the January sales from Chain Reaction Cycles.  Sorry about the poor quality image bit its been a bit manic here lately, as the bike was delivered the morning we ended up going into hospital for the birth of our second baby!

I don't know how standard the setup is for this model, but here is the brief spec.  Premier Pro hardtail frame (obviously, from the pic), 120mm Rockshox Recon Silver TK Soloair forks, Avid Juicy 3 hydraulic brakes 185mm front 160mm rear, Sram X7 shifters and derailleurs (27 speed), Shimano Octalink chain wheel, Sram 9 speed freewheel.  I also ordered and fitted some Shimano SPD/Flat MTB pedals, but don't yet own the SPD shoes.

I'm a casual rider, doing it mainly to keep fit.  I used to own a Barracuda Dropzone full suspension bike, which I bought second hand about 11 years ago.  At the time I was young and bought it purely for the looks as for no particular reason I was desperate at the time for a full suspension bike.  It probably spent 9 years in various garages, until I dug it out last June to start a health kick as I was getting over weight, and lethargic.  Since then I have managed to lose about a stone and a half and I feel so much better for it, and I'm currently riding 8 miles a night 3 nights a week round the roads in Barnsley.  I'll ride in any weather, except strong winds, but rain or snow I'm usually out there at the moment.  Ultimately, as my fitness and stamina increases I hope to continue road riding 3 nights a week, and go out some weekends on long treks off road.  Nothing major just light trekking through forests and countryside etc, like Monsal Trail and Rother Valley.

I bought the Commencal because the old one was unserviceable due to its age, and I was desperate for disk brakes as with my weight the V's just weren't instilling any confidence in me down hills, especially in the wet.  Plus a catastrophic failure of the rear wheel (bearings in the hub disintegrated) 4 miles from home just before Xmas was the final straw on the old bike.

I'm hoping from joining the forum that I can get assistance, where needed, on servicing and repairing the new bike myself.  I used to be pretty handy 15 years ago when I was a teenager, and I want to catch up with the modern components to get back into servicing/repairing stuff myself where possible.  Also, I'd like to try and tag on to some local get togethers if I can get some spare time on the weekends.

Well I think I've bored you enough, with my rabbiting on and on.

Regards

Paul

Barnsley is my stomping ground, but I have probs chucking the bike in the back of the estate and travelling somewhere to meet up.  Just finding the time at the moment is my issue.  Got a six year old and a 3 week old, both girls, keeping us busy and sleep deprived at the minute.

Do we have many people in the South Yorkshire region?

Chuckles at Dave suggesting Burnley is in south Yorkshire, and waiting for the backlash!

Welcome mate, you found the right place
Yep few people here from round your way, I'm not that far away in derby and regularly ride in peak district, Wharnecliffe isn't far from you and is well worth a visit, nice trail around langset reservoir too

Cheers guys, it would be nice to start learning some local-ish routes for variety.  I have a mate at work who does down hill riding as a hobby, he was going to take me round wharncliffe sometime soon as he goes there quite a bit.

Hmm, not sure if trolling...
Barnsley, not too far from the Trans Pennine Trail and just on the outskirts of Gods own MTB country.
Hop on the A68 and you're at Langsett and the foot of Cut Gate, one of the best trails in the Peak (in summer anyway, be a bit squidgy right now).
No distance at all to Wharncliffe's cross country trails.  Be careful following your DH mate down any of the DH tracks at Wharncliffe - you'll die  Wink
A61, A6101, A57 and hey presto, you're at Ladybower, some cracking trails all round that area.

I'm in Sheffield btw.  Maybe our paths will cross sometime. Welcome.

Yeah dont worry, he said the same thing and is gonna take me on the steadier trails.  He's a sound geezer and wont let me do anything he thinks is remotely life threatening.
