Hello everyone - My 2009 Meta 5.5 VIP needs some TLC it seems. There's a creaking sound from the central part of the frame.
I'm wondering whether replacing the main pivot axle and rocker link bolts would make any difference? Does anyone know what else I should replace. There are quite a few bits and pieces on sale on Chain Reaction Cycles at the moment, so it could be a good time to get some new bits fitted.
Just to let you know, I replaced the BB last week, so it's not that, and I have checked the seatpost and it's not that either. The fault occurs when pedalling and when freewheeling. The creak really sounds like it's coming from the suspension linkage.
There's no obvious flex in the suspension if I try to push the BB from the side of the bike while pulling the bars and saddle.
Thanks!!! Tristanspeed

Check its not a cable outer rubbing in the stop or somewhere, this can sound like a worn linkage / bearing.

I'll check that, but I think it sounds more like 'metal-on-metal' squeaking/creaking/cracking.
Is there any chance the frame is cracked? How do I check for that?

I've got and had the creaking from the same region on my 2010 Meta 55. First time round it was loose bolts in the suspension linkage. Not sure what's causing it this time round (linkage tight), although I think it might be a worn lower bush on the shock. I'll be removing the shock on Thursday so will know for sure then.

If you're going to try & eliminate the creak by systematically replacing all the bits until you find it, can I have the bits you take off? Worn lower bushes can usually be felt as a little bit of play when you lift the bike up by the saddle. The most common ones that eldude detection are seat clamp bolts and rear dropout bolts. It's possible for internal parts in the linkage to rub each other & creak. Does it creak if you just bounce up & down on it (out of the saddle)or only when moving? If you suspect a part of creaking apply some WD40 or GT85 and see if that stops the creak. If it does you've found it.

Hi guys - some helpful replies here, I'll have a look at each part as closely as I can. The creaking doesn't happen when I bounce the bike up and down with my hands, and it does happen both seated and standing.
My riding buddy's Lapierre had a similar sound and one of the linkage plates had clean split and broken....so I hope it's not that.
Would replacing a few of those bolts and axles you can buy on CRC help at all do you think?

Undo and re-tighten them first (about 6-8Nm if you're counting). Doesn't make sense to replce them unless you know they're to blame. But hey, it's your dosh. Search this forum for 'creak' and 'squeak'. Should find some other experiences.

My Meta used to creak...very annoying, and it too seemed to come from the contact system. The problem is that creaks travel up the frame so it is difficult to identify issues from sound alone. I traced mine to the drop outs. Remove, clean, greese, replace and viola silent biking. Try also greesing seat rails and seat post.

Just replaced my lower bush - was very worn. Also noticed the brake cable was not moving freely causing rubbing around the bottom bracket area - both things to check to eliminate creaking.

Went out today and the creak was still there! Bugger. Back to the drawing board.

I've got the same problem. I'd rather not be taking the contact system to bits so am slowly going through the other possible causes. BB no, cables no, seat post no, saddle no. New clamp tomorrow then dropouts.

While stripping/replacing is fun, as already stated it can be a waste of time. I had same problem on my 2008 and turned out to be the seatpost. Trouble is you can't tell if it's worked until you're out on a ride.
Try some gt85 on the linkage bolts too, may work

Have you checked the pedal bearings?

Problem solved - but now I'll have to wait to see whether the solution was a new seatpost clamp or the -17degree temperature. Will gt85 not strip away grease from the bearings/linkage?

Check the gear cables in the frame bosses.
