What are you running as your winter tyre setup?
I'm currently running Maxxis High Roller (60a / 2.35) front and rear.
Anyone have any better suggestions for a winter setup?
My riding is predominantly in the Peaks & N Wales with a few Trail Centres thrown in now and again.

Just put on a minion super tacky 2.35 on the front. Have run a minion 60a 2.35 and XR4 during the summer. Prefer the minions to high rollers as I tend to find the latter break away before gripping up again. Super tacky seemed fine on the usual Dartmoor trails aka wet granite. Time will tell if they are the right tyre.
Put a 2.1 high roller (60a) on the rear but may swap this out again for the minion 60a. Not least because I had my first pinch flat for a dogs age, having run 2.35 all year and moved over to tubeless until I couldn't get the super tacky or 2.1 HR mounted.

How fit are you? Swampthings have grip in the gloop but higher rolling resistance. Spesh Storm control are incredible vfm at around £23, tubeless ready, grippy & light.

Fitness is very good but I'm not the best technical climber.
Rear wheel spinning up / shit line choice on climbs usually gets me and then it's often very hard to get started again.

Ardents are a good fast rolling summer tyre. Not really enough tread for winter imo. I've just put a Spesh Storm 2.0 on the back, and will be putting a Purgatory 2.2 on the front. Both cost £23-25, come up large for their size and are tubeless ready (also very light). Too early to review them though.

Think you can't go wrong with specialised tyres to be honest

I've got some Spesh 2blis Eskar tyres on the 456.. I had them on the Meta for a short time, but found them to lack grip - ended up swapping them for minions which had loads more grip, but obviously weighed more..

I had to concede and re-retire my bald larsen on the rear, in place of a new Michelin Rock'r, as the lack of traction on slidy downward stuff was getting a little to lacking (was brilliant fun though, til I had to try and slow down!)
Rock'r is good for soft conditions, but squirms on hardpack until it gets worn down a bit.
Front is a highroller year round. I keep meaning to try a Minion, but never seem to get around to it.

Minions have fantastic grip, but are a tad weighty..

I would agree about minions. I had a set on 2 weeks ago for Snowdon & Coedybrenin. Grip is top notch. Single ply 2.35 wirebeads weigh about 870gm (info povided for Fly). I would be getting one for the front but the purgaory is cheaper, lighter, similar looking tread & 2bliss. Probably be crap...

are people running the front and rear specific Minions or just running the front specific tyre for both?

Swapped from worn out rollers front and back to spanking new kevlar roller on the back and minion front and loving it. 2.35s and tubed at the moment, but may go tubeless at some point. The costs for the extra kevlar rather than wire made me think a little at first, but sod it all that rotational weight means I'm less tired when I get to the top and they spin up faster and mean I can pedal faster towards the downs Only ever used Nokian that came on the old downhill bus I had and they we're pants.

I've used the dhf / dhr specific ones in the past.. I know alot of people just run the dhf front and rear. The dhr should roll better though, so I'd stick with that.
