Right i have some money burning a hole in my grubby little hands and i have narrowed it down to buying a GoPro but which one?Huh???

Hd hero 960
Hd helmet hero
or the new
Hd hero2

apart from the cost i have read all the info but what do you guys use/think?

http://gopro.com/products/?gclid=CN-Y1MKtp6wCFcod4Qod3mQTAw

Is the new one worth the extra cash over the 960? or do you just get the 960 and spend the spare cash on booze fags and hookers Grin

cheers

Personally Id say don't buy any. Not just GoPro, but any camera. The novalty soon wears off once you realise that even going as fast as you possible can it still looks slow.

Amateur helmet cams are the new wedding photos: You think they're great, cus they bring back great memories, but everyone else thinks they're dull and boring.

Use the £200 that they cost on a return flight to the alps for a summers riding. Take a normal camera to take stills instead of boring helmet cam footage.

Totally agree with what that bloke (who actually sells them and could have tried to sell you one) says but if you want to try one out I have a non HD Contour (vholdr) with a load of various mounts and stuff that Im considering selling for the exact reason Steve says
If you want an idea of the cameras quality, or to confi what Steve says then my Vimeo link is below with some crappy old vids on there

Ah a good wee debate.

I agree and disagree with what Steve is saying. I agree that to others, unless you are good at it and make a huge effort in the editing, the vids are boring to others. However they do make an excellent reminder / record of your day out on the bike. You don't have to make them every time you go out, but now and again its fine. If others find them boring then that's fair enough, up to me to make them better to keep people interested, but really that is not why you have them. They are for you and for when your too old to sit your brittle old arse on a bike, something to look back on and maybe for your family to see what you do, and what you did "back in the day".

So for example here is what I think good looks like. This is shot on a go-pro.

http://www.pinkbike.com/video/206340/

or this one which is quite inventive

http://www.pinkbike.com/video/211781/

So my question would be this. If this were a video made by you and featuring your mates would you get pleasure from watching it back? Personally I think there is only one answer to this. Plus look at the comments on pinkbike from others, many people clearly do not find them boring.

Anyway to answer your question - no idea. I've got the HD helmet hero 1080. Think I would go for the HD Hero 2 as its meant to be a good bit better.

Phew glad that's over.........................   Grin

Steve and Cramaj raisw good points.

If you want to make good videos, you've got to put a lot of effort into filming and editting.
I'd love to make more videos (I have lots of ideas!), but having already made one pretty good video, I now know just how much effort it takes to make something that's better than your typical pinkbike/youtube riding with your mates video, and I currently just don't have enough time. What free time I've got, I want to spend riding my bike, not faffing with cameras.

I've got the original GoPro HD, however I've only used it once since the spring, and that was during a two week holiday in Whistler.

As for the original question, unless you're planning on showing the vids on big screens, then the 960 is good enough quality for internet vids compared with the helmet hero.
However, the new Hero2 does have a better sensor and processor, meaning it's better in low light (original HD was actually pretty good in low light), and can record at faster frame rates. Although fast frame rates are only really any use if you're wanting to do short slow motion sequences, as it produces a proportionally larger data stream, which can cause even bigger problems with editting.

Went to Morzine/Les Gets this summer and bought an 808 Cam from Ebay that only cost £7 !. Took quite a few videos and was pleasantly surprised with how they came out.

by contrast heres one taken by a friend on a chest-mounted GoPro

The 808 was complete crap when it got dark (for example many of the Morzine Pleney runs that go in and out of the woods).

+1

If you do get one, make sure it's able to start and stop recording on the fly. I pissed mates off no end riding the Stanes while I unpacked my remote recorder, woke it up, pressed Record, zipped it back up, made sure cables were not too short or long, then looked up to find maybe 1 or 2 people had bothered to wait on for me to sort my life out! They were usually the vain types who liked being on camera :-)

something to look back on and maybe for your family to see what you do, and what you did "back in the day".

probably a reason i have bought one and it will not be only used on my bike. so i will give it a try and see what i come up with.

Cripes steve, you aint in a cheery mood eh!!

Personally i love helmet cams, even if its just for my own viewing pleasure, they capture the moment and memories that may fade if you only have them in the old thinkbox.
And i actually really like watching other ppls helmet cam footage. Admittedly its better if you know the ppl in it or are familiar with the trials, but my humble opinion is they are great bits of kit and can bring lots of viewing pleasure to many ppl.
So if you fancy one then go buy it dude, if it turns out to only be a fad...well fk it, then it will just be like 90% of peoples purchases, as more often than not things only have a short shelf life for keeping your interest, but they are worth the buy even if they only bring one smile to your face!! you cant put a price on a smile! Smiley

Right, thats Bongs' moment of softness..normal practise will return momentarily!!

Personally I use mine mostly to learn tracks for racing.

After I've sectioned it, I'll do a full run with the camera on and then keep watching this footage over the race weekend so I know the whole track by race run time.

Out of all the mounting locations I still think the chest mount gives the best perspective as it shows everything

Do it man, buy one! Have captured some good times on mine. The booze fags & hookers option would provide equally good times aswell, though..
Don't know why, but I'm never wearing it when I do something uncharacteristicly good, OR crash spectacularly..
