Hi all.

I'm sure there has been some threads about keeping your bikes safe and secure and detering thieves but just saw this and wondered if anyone has any experiance with them?

http://www.bikeshepherd.org/

I know its just a sticker that could probably be removed with a bit of patience but I am always on the look out for trying to keep my bikes safe.
Especially as they seem to constantly keep going up in value.

Mind you it doesnt protect components, but I suppose you could stick one on your forks as whats a new set of 40's these days worth??

Best bet is http://www.immobilise.com/ . It's free and is often searched by police when they locate a bike.

As with everything prevention is the best option (good lock, good place to lock it too, not leaving bike in vulnerable ares etc). After that if the worst does happen at least if you have the serial number recorded here it will help identify the bike if it turns up later.

I had 2 bikes nicked over 2 years ago now.  Bikes were etched, stickered, hologrammed, tagged & recorded on one of those database sites.  Didn't stop them being nicked.  I should have paid more attention to basic home security. And so should you.

House alarm. Decent bolts on the doors.  Ground anchor & decent chain & lock (or better - wall anchor above arm height 'cause they have to use their little arms on the cropper instead of body weight).  Various monitoring equipment available too.  Just make it difficult or very noisy.

I particularly like this.

My house is on the inside of an army Barracks, so mine are guarded by armed sentry.

But I have a large porch with all the bikes chained together with motorbike locks. When out they are locked to the floor of my van.
Our house insurance covers the bikes, except my supreme. Which when you tell them what it worth they laugh at you. So gonna need some individual insurance for the top end bikes

whats the Supreme worth then? M&S cover individual bikes upto £4,000 without declaring them as high value items
They will cover over £4k if you declare it

I Did alot of research into insurance and m&s was definitly the best, BUT...... Apparently I love in a 'high flood risk area' so they wont insure me.

in my experience insurance has been useless unless the bike is brand new, has anyone actually had a worth while payout when there bike has been stolen?

I insured my bike last year and they said it was worth 15% less each year from manufacture.. based on the frame age
so my 2009 furious that i built from components in 2011 will get a terrible payout .. so bad that I doubt I'll even find an ebay replacement for the same price.
in fact the forks that im waiting to receive might outweigh the payout for the full bike

then theres the insurance clauses....

best bet is getting a beast lock and anchor - although i like those land mines! reminds me of fallout

Decent lock & anchor is never bad advice, it will slow them down a bit.
Insurance can be OK if you get new for old cover.  I had 2 bikes nicked from my garage and the payout was enough to replace my bikes & pay for the house alarm with money to spare.

thanks steve - who does new for old?
i'd be willing to pay more for insurance if it was guaranteed to be replaced with same value if stolen from my home.
I guess you had to prove the value of your bikes when u set up insurance?

we got 6 bikes stolen from our garage last year and only one was worth claiming on (after the price was reduced according to bike year)

Because the garage is attached / integral to the house the theft was covered by contents insurance, new for old.  Back in 2009 when they were nicked the house mortgage was with the Nottingham and the contents insurance was through them.  Think it was underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance.

I didn't have to proove the value when we took out the insurance, they were just covered under 'valuables' up to a percentage of the house value.  I did have to produce a 'reasonable' number of receipts (I think I had them all) for what I was claiming for and evidence of what it would cost to replace like for like.
