I've finally got some scales to weigh my bikes, was quite suprised at the results..

2011 Cube Ltd Race (XL) - Standard form, other than very light bar-ends and some lock-on grips - 29.0lbs
2010 On-One 456 (XL) - Fox Floats /Mavic Crossrides / SLX - XT Groupset - 29.1lbs
2010 Meta 5 (XL) - Spank AM wheels / Fox Van's / Saint 1x9 Groupset - 34.12lbs

I was expecting the Cube to be a lot lighter and the Meta to be a bit heavier.. Just need to figure out where to lose the weight from now, I think it will be the wheels though !

Meta 55.1 2008, carbon Ibeam post, Gusset Staff  stem, FSA Gravity bars, Hope/Stans 355 rear wheel, DT Swiss front, Hope Tech V2 brakes w 180 rotors, High roller tyres, Sram X0/X9 gears and RF Deus Chainset (so apart from light rear wheel a pretty standard duty build) - 30.9lbs

Voodoo Hoodoo 1996 steel hardtail w Fox F80 forks, XT groupset, XTR Vee brakes, carbon easton seatpost w Charge Spoon saddle, RF Deus stem and Easton EA50 Monkeybars - 28.4lbs (a fair bit lighter than I thought it would be for a 15 year old steel frame that was low range at the time)

Commencal flame titanium hardtail DT Swiss 240s / Stans Olympic wheels w Nobby Nics, full XTR groupset, carbon ibeam seatpost & carbon FSA bars, Hope Mono mini pro brakes w 160 rotors, Fox F120mm forks Chris King headset - 23.4lbs Smiley (slightly heavier than when it had 100mm Rockshox SID's on it, but it rides much better so weight penalty well worth paying)

Too Commies are a medium, Voodoo is 17.5" frame
I did have the Meta down to just under 30lbs at one point but front wheel is still waiting a replacement rim and a rebuild, re-fit that and put Nobby Nics on for summer and it will be hovering just above 30lbs I think

When they quote weights for bikes, are they always for the smaller frames ??

2010 Meta 5 (XL) - Spank AM wheels / Fox Van's / Saint 1x9 Groupset - 34.12lbs

My XL 2010 framed 55 is 31lbs, but that's with fox floats and pro2 / stans flow wheels running tubeless and inc spd pedals.

Don't think I could get it down significantly without compromise or muchos expense.

Jimbo thats heavy for a Meta , No? 34lbs

Its amazing what you can buy a lightish bike sub 30lb for and what the manufacturers do as a stock bike.

Must admit they do pretty well in my opinion. Then again when your buying thousands of forks and groupsets in bulk they get huge discount. We end up spending a small fortune to shift 2-3 lbs as an individual project on a bike

My meta 5.5 VIP 2007 was tricked out, DT Swiss 4.2D's , Running Tubeless, Formula Oro Puro Ti brake set, Pike 454 dual air forks, Easton XC90 Carbon bars, Wellgo MG1 pedals full XTR all round and still couldnt get it lower than 27.5lb. Then it got stolen  Cry

As I have been putting together my 2010 Meta 55 frame and forkset I have been wieghing each individual bit (because I can!). Anal I know but what the heck. Just waiting for my new front wheel (Hope Pro 2 on Mavic 719) but I reckon it will be dead on 30lbs with pedals. With all the carbon on it (rear end, seatpost and bars) I thought that I would meet my target weight for the bike of 29lbs but it is not going to be the case. The only cheapish way to lighten it will be to replace the heavy Continental Verticals (I do like them though) with Nobbly Nicks which my riding mate swears by. Other than that, which may shave half a pound off the bike, it would cost loads. Would I notice it - probably not (except in my wallet  Cry).

I've weighed my wheels to see what savings could be made there..

The wheels on the meta are Superstar Switch hubs, Double butted spokes, Spank Subrossa rims, freeride UST rimstrips, Maxxis Minion 2.35 supertacky tyres.  The front has a 9mm axle, the rear is a maxle.  Both tyres have quite a bit of sealant in them, and both have 200mm rotors..

Front; 5.54Lbs / 2.5kg
Rear (minus the maxle skewer); 5.94Lbs / 2.69kg

In comparison to the Ringle Ryde XC wheels on my Cube with innertubes and lightweight Schwable tyres..

Front; 4.22Lbs / 1.9kg
Rear; 6.42Lbs / 2.91kg

What is a good weight for a strong AM wheelset with tyres and rotors ??  I assumed that the wheels on the Cube would be a lot lighter ??

thats just short of  about 5kg?
Dunno with tyres and rotors (and I assume cassette - which you dont specify) etc but Hope/Stans wheels weigh in around 1.8-2kg a pair depending on which Stans rim it is
My Hope / Stans 355 are about 1850g, my DT Swiss / Olympic are about 1700g, with Stans rimstrips and valves but no skewers etc
I wouldnt describe either of my rims as AM though, but the stronger Flow or Arch (or whatever they are called now) are still among the lightest rims for their width/strength

Cheers Iain,

I've updated the weights with metric to make things a bit easier to compare. I think a good portion of the weight maywell be the Minion's, but I'll remove them from the rim to check before I order anything else..

The wheels from the Meta have a Shimano XT Cassette 9 Speed M770 - which according to CRC is 256g.

Single ply 2.35 Minions weigh 800 - 870 gms each without the sealant.
Can't believe the rear on your Meta is lighter than the rear on your Cube.  Sure you're weighing like for like?

P.S. Strong, light, cheap. Pick any two.
