Basically as the title says. Anyone have any experience with Conti Mountain King's (2.4) on a Meta 5.5? Not an easy tyre to get in Aus, so may have to use ebay I was looking at the protection version and like Sam Hill, i don't ride in the rain " Me bike gets muddy" (Just wish i could ride like him  ) so the mud clearance thing is not a big issue for me, unlike you poor English people.

I have Mtn Kings 2.2 on my Meta 5. They are pretty skinny. They roll quite fast though. Knobblies are quite spaced out so are good in the mud. However, if you like to give it a bit of stick I wouldn't bother - can't imagine they'd be anywhere near as good as High Rollers 2.35 (another skinny tyre for size) in the corners which is why when the next consignment of kevlar ones comes in I am going to replace the Contis for them.

Well now. Conti Mtn Kings.

Yesterday I was over Cwmcarn doing the XC loop. First lap, no problems. Adjusted forks and rear shock an thought I'd do another lap. Puncture in the front about half way round. Then another, but this time it was on the fast descent (where the ground drops away to left and there is a really good open view) - quite rocky and undulating and exposed. As you can guess I wasn't up for falling down the steep bit so I did a kind of controlled crash, still stuck in my SPDs. Broke a spoke or two when the wheel hit the ground horizontally (must've hit a rock). Net result: taco-ed Crossmax ST wheel. Rebuild required. Quote including labour = £160!!!!!

Moral: don't use these tyres on fast rocky descents unless you are prepared to put insane amounts of air in (I've always ridden with fairly high pressures) but then you'll have no grip. I've known all along that I wanted High Roller 2.35 kevlars on instead but no where has them at the moment and I've been wing-ing it a bit with the Contis. Guess my luck ran out.

I've just put 2.4 protections on the front, done a couple of muddy local loops and a couple of wet Afan loops. The jurys out because although they were good on exposed rock I lost the front end multiple times in the mud, even once uphill! I had 2.25 Cinders on before and were good if a little slow on the road.
I have 2.1 60a High rollers on the back and love them, they are light, fast and keep grip when they really shouldn't and above all I prefer a back tire that slide predicatably before the front goes.
