Are the these frames really OK to use when they have cracked at the seat tube / top tube junction? I have a frame sitting at home in the same state as this one that would make a good winter bike:

Must admit that I thought these frames were heat treated and couldn't be re-welded. Don't know anything about welding really, I'm sure real cycles know what they are talking about.

I'd NEVER buy a cracked frame. It may be fine for a year, it may only be fine for a week. It's a risk.

I had a hairline crack in my 2008 meta 6 (weld where top tube meets headtube), noticed it after a trip to Wales, rode once more at my local trails and noticed it had got worse (noticeably worse) so I have no faith in a cracked frame, it's pretty rare for it to sheer/snap completely but I for one was not willing to take that risk flying down a black run and find myself chewing metal!

New 09 has been purchased and the 08 is going through the warranty replacement as I type this! :-)
