Just wondering... (warning: verging on weight weenie topic)

Guys,
I weighed my 5 the other day and it is 14.1kg, or a smidgen over 31lbs. I was surprised.
Now don't get me wrong, I am not a weight weenie. But If the opportunity was there to shift some of this weight I would gladly take it.
So this leads into me recently wrecking the roller on my DRS, and it being bent and slightly worse for wear. I am thinking of replacing it with a Stinger, they are cheap and everyone seems to love them, plus at 90g they are light. I am just wondering whether anyone runs/knows of someone who runs a Stinger with no bash? I put the full DRS set up on a year ago, and the only marks my bash has on it are from where it drops onto the lip of my boot as I take it out of the car, seems a bit overkill...
Alternatively I might go for a BBG bash

My problem with thin metal bashes is that they bend very easily. Might be worth thinking about an e.thirteen turbo charger, only 86g compared to the superchargers 142g, still for £40 it's only a 0.1lb saving. Maybe listing your spec up here and your normal usage we can suggest some other places to economically save decent amounts of weight. Remember to list all the parts like seatposts and stems as the factory fit ones are often very heavy and can be replaced cheaply for something a lot lighter.

My '08 medium VIP, Float RLC, XT/X9 with Maxic XM719's comes in at slightly under 30lbs so don't expect too much.

Here is my spec. Front tyre I know is an issue, along with the slime tube.
Spec:
Frame: Meta 5.5 UK in Medium
Fork: Fox Float RL QR15
Chainset: Shimano SLX
Front Brake: Hope Tech M4 with braided hose and 180 floating rotor
Rear Brake: Hope Tech X2 with braied hose and 160 floating rotor
Bars: Easton EA50
Stem: Hope XC 90mm 10 degree rise
Shifters: Shimano XT
Grips ODI Ruffian
Front derailleur: Shimano SLX
Rear derailleur: Shimano XT Shadow (Long cage)
Front wheel: Hope Pro II on DT 4.2D
Front tyre: Maxxis High Roller 2.35 (wire) w/cheapo tube
Rear wheel: Hope Pro II on DT 5.1D
Rear tyre: Maxxis Advantage 2.1 folding w/slim tube
Rear QR: Maxle
Cassette: Shimano XT
Seatpost: Thomson 330mm
Saddle: SDG Bel Air RL Ti Cow Print
Seat clamp: Hope QR
Pedals: Crank Brothers Candy C
Cheers guys!
Edit: Usage wise, I ride mostly cross country at home, but my bike gets a holiday to Wales as often as I can take it. Throwing it down the trails there is what it is built for, riding up them however is quite a chore.
Galaxy - I did not delete your post!

I prefer the term durable and suited to the job.
It gets used for everything, and has now been built in it's current form for nearly 3 years, without any major issues.
Thing is, the lighter a bike is, the more it'll bounce around and be knocked of course, so lightweight isn't always the better option.

It seems that what is causing the weight are front tire, crankset, front der, rear maxle and the grips

I think durable is a good way to describe a weighty bike! I had never considered the extra weight stopping me from bouncing down the trails, maybe the weight is what makes a Meta feel so planted. Still I would prefer that weight to be sub 30lb.
So -
Front tyre - switch to folding saves a bit, what about changing from 2.35 to 2.1? Are the 2.1 high rollers skinny?
Crankset - a future upgrade is on the cards, I already have Middleburn rings so they will stay, any ideas for replacements, XT?
Front derailleur - really galaxy? i cant imagine saving much there at all.
rear maxle - i love this thing, its staying.
Grips - again, really?
Cheers

I'd say not to worry beyond the front tyre really and even that would only save half a pound max. The spec seems sensible for a meta and without spending silly money on stuff that will only save a handful of grams it's not worth it. Like my 36lb supreme that I use for everything, it's a spec that's as light as I can get it without compromising performance for it's intended purpose. Yours will handle being thrashed around trails without the worry of your uber light rims etc snapping.

its a sensible, strong and pretty good spec, I wouldnt change anything other than front tyre, but I wouldnt go down to a 2.1 all year round
Whats point of a slightly lighter bike you cant keep on the trails cause of no grip?

Your 2.35 wire HR on the front will weigh nearly 800g. More if it's a super tacky. There are plenty of sub 700g 2.2 to 2.4 folding options out there. Rampage, Ardent, Rubber Queen that will save you 4 oz or more rotating weight without sacrificing performance. The slime tube will be heavy as well. If you don't tend to puncture much you might ditch that (save it for special occasions perhaps (e.g. riding in Spain).

They are great tyres but I found my Rubber Queens really, really draggy at the weekend, gonna ditch them while the trail;s are so dry (rain tomorrow then)
Gonna risk putting my Nobby Nics on front and Racing Ralphs on back of both the HT and Meta, I might also pi$$ around with Stans sealant etc. It will either make the going easier or completely sketchy
oh and yes a 2.1 High roller is quite skinny, Maxxis generally are on the skinnier side I think. If you go maxxis I would stick with a 2.35 up front and 2.1 rear, (Rubber Queens are huge in comparison)
tyres are such a personal choice though its almost pointless trying to recommend something for you
