Do any of you guys ride in competitions? I'd like to see how I could compete in some sort of XC or trail riding event on my 55XT.

I'm talking amateur level of course! Just something to give me extra training motivation and to satisfy my competive streak! Angry

My wife and I take part in Trai Break events

'Southern Trail Rides are designed to take the hassle out of a great days riding. If you're new to the sport and don't know where to ride, or a more experienced biker looking to find new areas, or if your lifestyle just leaves you too busy to plan your weekends riding, the Trail Rides are ideal for you.

Just choose from one of three waymarked off-road mountain bike rides, laid out to suit a range of riders. The rides are held in locations across the south, selected for the quality of their off road riding. Event bases are chosen for their good parking and general facilities.'

Depends where you are based...........http://www.trailbreak.co.uk/trail_rides

Depends what sort of event you want to do.

You can enter the XC races in one of the easier categories.
Endurance events - Quite  afew 24hr events (Relentless, 24twelve, Sleepless in the Saddle....), 24twelve also has a 12hr race running at the same time, or if you want to sample scotland, 10 Under the Ben, 10 at Kirroughtree, and 10 More in Moray are highly recommended.
Meridas - Series of MTB marathons where you can pick a short, medium or long route (around 50k, 70k, and 100k), although the Meridas aren't technically races.

Thanks so far guys.....I'm in Warrington so normally ride in North Wales, although the Peaks is probably as close.

Will Google for some of the names mc mentions, unless someone can point me to a URL?

Am also considering the extra expense involved....I guess I'm more likely to wear bits out or break them if I'm riding more competitively!!!  Cry
