Im in disagreement on the parachute thing, if you are gonna get full facer do it right so you dont have to buy twice!! if you get a good one then it will allow you to breathe and ventillate just fine, i personally love the 661 evo, and at some of the prices you can get them online at say crc then it really isnt to be sniffed at!! I found that in france even in the blasing sunshine and with goggles on that i didnt get any hotter than when i use my fox transition helmet, but thats just maybe cos i was going so fast and the airflow was like that of a wind tunnel  Wink  hehe.

It’s not a full face, it's a XC lid with a removable chin guard. At a weight of 550g it's ideal for XC/AM riding, can be worn comfortably while climbing, with a bit more protection than an open face. Not meant for downhill, for downhill use a full face helmet.

These days I use an open face lid for the mellow stuff, and a full face for DH.

I had the 661 evo till i sent it back after it fell apart, then i got a THE (Carbon Ink 2) which i've never used, and am now selling, and i'm gonna get another evo off CRC.

And no, FF helmets are never overkill, it's up to how the person wears it feels safe.

Although I understand what people are saying about you can't be safe enough and a FF isn't overkill, but at what point do you draw the line? The safest way to ride is to wear a full face helmet, goggles, MX/DH gloves, a pressure suit, padded undershorts, full knee and shin protection and a neck brace, but who the hell wants to go riding in that? You might want a paramedic running alongside as well, just in case.  Roll Eyes
MTBing is a risky sport but I realise that, take REASONABLE precautions and then if anything bad happens then it happens. Everything is a compromise and its whatever you feel happy with but going to the extremes seems pointless to me. The reason you fall off more when you are wearing more armour is it makes you feel invincible so you will take more risks, but unfortunately your skill level stays the same no matter what armour you are wearing, so you will fall off more.

What chrissturch says is good.

Something like a Parachute will never provide the same level of protection as a proper full facer, but it will provide more protection than a normal xc lid, and be far cooler than a proper full face. I've used my full facer for xc rides, and it spends more time hung over the bars, as it's just too hot to wear while going uphill.
If you mainly ride XC, and want that bit extra protection, then get something like a parachute. It will help protect your face, but just don't expect it to do much if you plan on hitting trees/rocks/ground face first at high speed.
