???Off to Afan for the first time at the end of March and i'm contemplating on getting a full face helmet.
I currently have a Fox Flux helmet which is ok .
Like to ride jumps and drops but nothing to major, but not a downhiller.
Would it be overkill to wear a full face on the trails there, would it look out of place? The black run ok, but what about the other trails.? Huh? Wink
Any advise appreciated, Chris

I wouldn't want to wear a full face round there. There is a lot of climbing where a full face would be too much, and the downhills aren't severe enough to need one either. I saw a couple of blokes with full face helmets on Saturday but I'd say its overkill.

If the route is up and down all the way you would regret wearing it. You can get away with one, on say the red route at GT, just because you cycle up one side of the hill and then belt down the other side. On the way up your just strap it to your back.

As always don't worry about what people think is overkill, you can fall on your chin on a regular blue route as well as a full downhill run. It's what you feel comfortable and safe in that counts.

I'd have to say its entirely your call m8 - I've seen injuries when people have landed on their faces, aint pretty.  Dont think i've seen or heard of anyone that was hurt more as a result of wearing a full face helmet either.

I wouldn't say it's overkill - thats not a term I think you should associate with your safety.

Afan are red routes and quite tame reds I thought (did all 3 trails this weekend)
You will get hot in a full facer round there - some major uphills
but like others say - what price safety?
...and if your ugly then a full facer might help too Wink

If you feel u need a full face to be more confident on those trails then get one mate, you would kick yourself if u felt u would like one but didnt buy one and then fell of and messed up your mush. If its overkill so what! its best eing overkill and being safe man! If you fail to prepare u prepare to fail (haha, thats my quote of wisdom for the day!! )

Just been there for 3 days ,and I would say wear one as the Dh stuff is very stoney/rocky not large ones but enough to cut your face up,I usually wear a Met parachute but never this time for some reason, but wished I had.Just take it off for the up hills, some of them are very long.Unless you popeye that is.

I was gonna take mine but forgot it. What I usually do if I wear one is either strap it to my back pack or hang it off the handlebars on the climbs. You usually stop to catch your breath at the top anyways. I'm a big believer in Sod's Law so I'd say I didn't need one only because I didn't come a cropper.

I took mine this weekend but didn't end up wearing it, would have definately felt a bit more confident on the rocky downhills if i had it on.

I still would have taken you and Mick MegaAvalanche style on that tight switchback though, How's the hands today? Recovered from your braking cramps Wink

nah I meant I came round the corner and took Mick and Brownback by cutting the corner on them 'mega-avalanche style'. Mick wasnt very happy called me a cheeky rude word and set after me, right on my trail I could hear him breathing down my neck. Can clearly hear him on the video too

I'm with Fly on the Met Parachute, a XC lid with a chin guard, great compromise. I used one when I was getting back into MTB, and it saved my face from gravel rash a couple of times.
