my best mate been riding mountain bikes for over 20 years both pleasure and competitions, he keeps telling me all these bike companies do is re invent the wheel, and make us believe its better than last years model, he just shrugs his shoulders at some of these new bikes eg carbon, square tubing etc

I started in '86 but did have a long layoff in the early noughties thanks to rather nasty injury. That said I can see why your mate feels that way. Perhaps a reason why I also have a steel, rigid singelspeed for when I want to get 'back to basics'

I too started in mid 80's but had a lay off for a few years late 90's - early 'noughties'
When I came back it was via a 2nd hand full suss Marin, and whilst I never liked the bike the whole full suss, disc brakes, proper LT forks and change to a more relaxed geometry was a relevation
I still have my 1996 Joe Murray designed steel Voodoo bike that pre dates even V Brakes, and Ive ran it with 80-130mm forks on it (not designed for them but it changed the angles really favourably actually) and now as a fully rigid dropbar hack bike (was out earlier in the week and it was sooo much fun) and everything in between and it always takes eveything so easily

I can therefore see where cloudynights mate is coming from, but some of the changes have made the sport much better and helped improve beyond anybodies thoughts the sort of riding people can do
I have a similar mate - he refuses to upgrade to discs, still runs the original V brakes & 80mm fork on his Marin hardtail, he gets everywhere and is an awesome rider but I always wonder how much better he could be and easier he would find things if he did embrace some of the changes from the last 10-15 years. Or even just some of the technical clothing - he rides in the same pair of cut off army trousers, wooly hiking socks and SPD boots he has had for as long as I can remember - to see him out is almost cringeworthy, he looks like Compo from Last of the Summer Wines on a bike!  (- but then maybe Im jealous that I cant fit in the trousers I wore last week let alone some Ive had for 15 years)
Each to their own though I guess!

o yeah i agree i come from a road bike background but me and my mate think that certain aspects of modern mountain bikes are great disc brakes, rear suspension are a big improvement,if nothing else they make it safer

Its funny how firms like Yeti, BMW etc have real hardcore followers and some other brands just dont get that affection from folk, i wonder why ?

If you spend that much money on something (ie Yeti), you’re going to justify it with brand loyalty.

I only ride them 'coz I get them cheap  Wink
Santa Cruz are my No. 1 choice, a V10, Nomad and superlight would be my bikes of choice instead of the Commies.

I demoed a super light twice and thought they were terrible bikes, not as good as folks saying they were.

Yeh good point. I think theres a certain amount of brand loyalty on here, but would imagine if the same thing had been asked 2-3 years ago you'd have had a lot more. I just think the huge range of bikes available now with the same performance but less weight has taken the edge from Commencal a bit.

think a bike has to feel right,it takes you too some great places and hard times, not getting rid of my meta regardless of whats better out there, just keep changing the parts when they wear or brake.

I agree that there was more brand loyalty 2 years ago, probably started withering away once people started having to send cracked frames back then wait for ages on replacements. As for me, now on my fourth frame.  Have I any loyalty left? I still love th way the bikes ride and hav had a blast on every Commie I'v been on but put it this way I'd sell my brand new unbuilt Meta6 frame if I thought anyone would buy it.
