Right i am after a new hardtail bike for blatting around on and am going to get it on the bike2work scheme. The limit is £1000 but the shops usually allow you to add some cash on top if it is a bit more  Wink

I have though about the Orange Crush or Whyte 901 Trail.

Any other suggestions

Santa Cruz Chameleon. Suit you down to the ground. Bet you wouldn't be able to break one of those. Built like a brick outhouse!!

orange crush is an amazing bike. my mate had one 09 in orange and for a hardtail it was a nutter. great components for £1000 and took everything you threw at it. my friend has rode my meta and he says the crush is a meta with no rear shock its that good. the stroker trail brakes are excellent. mavic rims nice and strong and sram gearing are reliable. fox forks 140 and it rocks. hope this helps tex. he is 5,11 and rode a medium all around scotland with no probs.

i suppose it depends what the main use of the bike will be. full xc or a bit of light free riding aswell. the crush is great for both but comes into its own on jumps and drops. also tried a whyte 905 and it was light as a feather. flew on xc courses but didnt feel good when off the ground. good  spec but expensive for a hard tail because of the name in my opinion.

Hey Tex, sorry to hear about your mishap, sounded nasty.

I actually quite like Whytes, ideally the carbon 19 - lovely bike.

There's a shop in Newark (Zone cycles or something) that stocks them exclusively, the chap in there's a good bloke and I'm fairly sure he has demo bikes available so it might be worth dropping in and having a word.

Chris,

Where is that shop in Newark?? Will definitely pop in as working in Newark from the new year onwards.

I had thought about the Boardman Pro Ltd as well as it seems a v good bargain for the money spec wise.

My problem is although i like doing XC i like mixing it up on the jumps and DH as well. I used to have a specialized epic and it used to take a right battering when i would hammer it downhill and do the occasional jump on it also.

I really do need something that can handle both hence thinking about the Orange Crush.

Damo can you get the SC Chameleon as a fully built bike or frameset only?

I also considered getting a Ragley Mmbop and building that up.

I think a Chameleon will cost quite a bit more than 1K.
As for the Whyte carbon - well that's not exactly cheap either and anyway, you would break it. Wink

For the money Crush looks good.
I was going to suggest a Genesis Alpitude but I looked and they're 1.6K
Genesis Abyss? 1.2K with a free helmet from Bikeactive (lets face it, you can always use another helmet) Roll Eyes

I would be surprised if you could you buy frames only on bike to work.
Also you need to check if you can add money.  My firm do bike to work through Halfords and they said no when I asked that question.

You can buy frames as thats how i got my Meta 5 VIP in the first place. I added the required £100 as it was £1100 when it first came out.
I could get;
Ragley Mmbop £275
Rockshox Revelation £299
Avid juicy 3 Complete set £100
Cane Creek 1.5 Reducer headset £30
Raceface atlas FR Bars £60
Shimano Deora Chainset £50
Shimano Deore Front Mech £20
SLX Shifters £40
Deore Rear Mech £28
SDG Saddle and I Beam post £58

Total £960 ish.

I have wheels and all the other bits i need hiding in my shed.

The Orange P7 S is worth a look
Also worth checking out On-One website.  They often do full builds of the Inbred for about a grand with Revs or Rebas (depending on what they seem to have kicking around).  Pretty bombproof frames that will take up to a 6" fork.
Dialled frames are also a nice frame to build kit round - I think they had a guy ride Mega on an Alpine frame.

Can you tell I'm choosing frames designed to take a bit of abuse Wink

If it was my money I reckon I'd be looking at an Inbred with U-turn Revs or Pikes on.

Not looked at this years Commie range but they were decent value for money.
