Hi guys.  For any of us venturing forth on night rides I thought I would share this wee gem with you.

[urlhttp://www.thephotonshop.co.uk/page23.htm][/url]

I've just ordered one for my helmet.  Not an "official"  biking light, but a bit of Velcro strapping will attach it no problem.  Cheap, small and very bright.

you seen it in action yet?
they say its twice as bright as an aa mag lite? that aint that bright tho, the lights i have for my bike are a set of smart ones and they are easily 3-4times more powerful than the biiiiiig badboy mag lites and i dont think my smart lights are bright enough yet  Roll Eyes

I would second Bong, sorry Linda but 180 lumens prob is okay for easy fireroad riding at night or coming back from the pub but anything faster or more technical you might struggle

..although power isnt everything, beam spread and light colour is important too so it may make a decent secondary helmet light but I would team it up with something more powerful and with a wider light spread

There is a thread on here where people are rcommending these - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16092

900 lumens for about £35 (you need to buy mounts etc seperate)

or these actual bike ones for a little bit more (about £65) - http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.29489

Thread is here - http://www.commencalownersclub.com/index.php/topic,4758.0.html

:-((( Hmmmmm!!  Thanks for that boys - I should have posted a question on here first instead of taking someone else's advice as read.  The guys been biking for years and is a biking instructor, and I thought he would know his stuff, he recommended the light.  So i just went and ordered it!

I've just bought some of bike specific lights from dx.  Exchange rate is pretty good at the moment (not as good as 18 months ago though) so worked out at just over 50 quid.  Should have them by end of the week.

Marginal lights are the best.

Having daylight replicators means you miss the entire point of nightrides  Cheesy

Never understood the point of riding in the dark with bad lights.  Surely, not being able to see the trail defeats the object of night riding?

It does make make it a lot more bloody exciting though. Especially when you miss the corners! Done that a few times  Grin

Well it's arrived.  I tested it in the back garden and it seems pretty bright.  I'll see how it goes Thursday.

How is that possible, surely that is brighter than the sun!!
Could become the essential trailpack multitool for Commie owners through - you can use it on nightrides and to fuse the cracks in your frame back together Grin

Bit concerned by some of the reviews people post about it though, what sort of people buy that torch? Wink

"I own many high powered flashlights from all the top manufactures" - oh yeah, why, what you up to???

"It also happens to serve as an excellent self defense tool-not only can you blind your assailant, you can burn his eyes in the process too" - Nice!!

"only 15 minutes of battery life but plenty of time for you to carry out your burning desires" Mmm okay

"Did i mention the Torch is quite effective against ants?" - What??

Most fun nightride I've ever had was one where my lights died about 20min into it. Spent the next hour and a half riding behind mates and trying to avoid hitting too many stumps/branches/rocks.

Not being able to see everything on the trail helps to improve your riding. You learn to look at where you're going (ie where your light is pointing), and let the bike float over any obstacles in the trail. In good light, you tend to look at obstacles, and then tense up as you hit them.
Off course, it all goes t**s up when you miss the two slippery roots running diagonally across the trail, and do your best superman impression, much to the amusement of your mates Roll Eyes

Undecided Oh well that's forty squid down the drain.  That light really wasn't very great at all.  I could barely see anything last night.  I don't want the place lit up like daylight, but it would be nice to see where I am going.  If I add up how much I have spent on cheap lighting so far, I could have bought a reasonable set for about £130 and been done with it!

Well going to a light demonstration/halloween bash in the bike shop at Ae at the end of the month, so I'll see what's on offer there. Until then I shall struggle on in the gloom!  Roll Eyes
