Hi all

Went down to Cannock on Saturday and there's lots of new trails being built away from FTD close to the stile cop. The trails look great but they seem to have been building them for ages.

Has anyone any idea when they're planned to be finished and open.

Official line from Chase trails is that Phase 2 will open "Easter 2010"
What I have seen looks really good, alot more technical (and hilly) than Follow the Dog, I wonder what they have done to the 'Monkey' though Huh?
Check out www.chasetrails.co.uk and follow the link to the blog for regular updates

I've moved to a ye olde place called Rutland which is roughly 1hr 30 from both Cannock and Chicksands.  I need to get my DH fix which would you recommend?

Stile Cop at Cannock has 5 or 6 different runs
Not into downhill so much but think they are quite short, not that technical but lots of work is being done on them so quite fun for a while
Vic-Tim might be able to advise, he goes there regular I think

Wharnecliffe (Sheffield) prob not much more than 90mins from you as well
and Sherwood Pines has a dual descender course with some jumps, woodwork and a couple of wallrides - BigTex is the expert for advise on there!

Cannock has a lot more DH runs than chicksands as it has 3 times the vertical drop, the push up route is also pretty damn quick.  I agree that wharncliffe is another good option, why not check both out?  Chicksands is good for a bit of fun and some 4X and duel action too, however it is very limited on the DH front, one of the "DH" lines is more of a freeride line, and the other is pretty damn straight forward and apart from the two jumps is probably a red at the most.

I've been riding the Stile Cop trails all summer and though short, they are loads of fun. There is plenty to build some speed, some nice little hoppy drop off stuff, lots of lovely roots...and some scary big stuff to build up to! Choice of 6 or so lines, all a couple of minutes long ( mini dh lines really ). Great to practise or session on!

Also lots of building happening all the time.

Worth a trip, but I think Chicksands has a little edge with the 4X course?

Hope that helps

I have ridden Chicksands and Cannock and both do well with what they have got. Chicksands is probably a bit more all weather than Cannock but other people may disagree.
If you head up to Sherwood Pines there is some new north shore with a couple of 6ft drops and a wall ride and other table tops all on the DH tracks.. There is also a jump park with three lines ranging from small to massive.
Not much around Rutland although there are a few semi decent trails to ride. I live up by Grantham so ride a loop that brings me down to Rutland occassionally.

i ride cannock regularly & echo what vic-tim said. it is great fun for a few hours out. when you are coming up next time let me know & ill meet you if i can! wharncliffe is better but is a bit further for you to travel. there is a lot of natural dh ridning in the derbyshire peaks.
i pop over to rutland cycles alot as they normally have good discounts (nice royal gear on sale at the mo)

cheers, jon

Seems to be a few regulars - shall we organise a commie cannock ride? we could do some downhill (I'll stay at the back so not to slow you down) and then head over for a lap of the dog or some of the other trails?

In a few weeks when my finger is fully mended!  I had the pins pulled out today and have some movement, but the new bone hasn't hardened yet and.  I'm sooo desperate to ride again!

only prob with cannock is that it gets so busy at weekends unless you know the cheeky trails - most of which nr the downhill runs have been closed or destroyed to build phase 2
should be better come easter but I can prob do any time as its only 40 mins away

The Monkey is going to be part of Phase II, I believe that it was originally built as a sort of Phase II prototype. It has had a bit of work done on it recently to make it more technical! They have also had to put in alternative 'red graded' lines.

There's loads of stuff to ride at Cannock if you know where to look.  Wink

Iain

Gret idea for a commie get together, I'd be up for that if it's at a weekend but if it's mid week I'll struggle.

I only know the FTD, downhill trails, the monkey trail and I found 1 other downhill trail near the monkey which isn't part of the new trails which was good fun, really tight, steep and twisty, similair in distance to the monkey trail but footpath width. Other than that I don;t know the area too well.

There's loads of trail's on the other side of the road from swinnerrtons which we went on last year with Redtil and SteveP which were really good but I couldn;t find them now I'm afraid.

I'd also like to have a go on the downhill trails, I keep meaning to but never get round to it, last time I went down them was in 1999 when it was just a collection of footpaths and it only had 2 runs if I remember right.....so it'd be good to have a blast with a couple of the more downhill orientated guys to learn some tips etc
