I've got one. Icebreaker long sleeve top. Only worn it once, but was impressed. Comfy, warm when it needed to be, cool when it didn't. Look on the cotswold outdoor website - they're half price.

I like it - just only had it a week- then my frame cracked  Roll Eyes. My mate has had one for months and keeps raving about it, so decided it must be good.

But yeah - after one ride I'd highly recommend it. Certainly better than a normal long sleeve top by a long way. For £65 I'd say it wouldn't be worth it, but for £30 on sale it's a no brainer.

Merino base layers are good.

I've had a howies one for a couple of years now, and it does what fanatic says.
Normally only wear mine during cold weather, but have worn it in the summer under my body armour, and not been noticeably hotter/colder compared to not wearing it.

Only issue is how long it takes to dry, as putting it on while still wet with cold sweat isn't the nicest of things!

I've got a long sleeeed one for skiing - picked up in a sale for £30.
At that price, as has been said, no brainer.  At £60 or so, difficult to justify.

They are warner than their equivalent weight synthetic and definitely warmer than you expect, comfy, get rid of sweat fairly well and don't smell too bad after a days exercise. Mind you, after three days ....

I have three of the Howies ones. Thick short sleeve and thin long and short sleeve. I wear them all the time in winter and they easily last all week on the commute to work without getting whiffy! As well as being excellent for all day rides and cold nights camping.

They're not cheep though, keep your eye out for sales, they quite often do a special Merino sale.

They need to fit nice and tight too or they don't work too well.

I've been using Merino for base layers for 10 or so years ( I actually got a free Howies one when they first made one.....I had it on 'test', but forgot to give it back honest! ). I've currently got several sets of ThirtyTwo Merino base layers ( designed for snowboarders ) and they are pretty good too ( though i did used to work for ThirtyTwo, so I am Biased ).

Just don't be tempted by the Smelly Helly brigade! ( I have cleared room with Smelly Hellys in my time! )

Hope that helps

I have 5 merino tops - they're the absolute dogs, really light weight and thin so you can layer 2 or 3 and still only have a thin layer on.  You can also wear them for days on 'endurance' or walking trip and they don't smell.

Another recommendation for the Howies NBL Merino, fantastic garment, I often wear it  in light rain instead of a waterproof jacket, as it’s more comfortable in a wet merino top, than being baked in a “breathable” jacket.

Another vote here for merino base layers, they really are the business. Sounds daft but it's worth keeping an eye on Aldi's website, they sometimes do them as part of their ski wear. I paid about £14 quid for a top last year, wish i'd bought a couple more.

I was going to buy a short sleeve Howies Merino, then I found Embers Merino:

Same quality, much cheaper.
