So I've just booked flights to New Zealand for December Grin. Landing at Christchurch and then making our way north from there. Going to be over there for the whole month and was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where I can get some decent riding in? Will need to be somewhere that I can arrange bike hire as well as unfortunately I won't be taking my trusty steed with me.

I know you say your heading North from Christchurch but if you happen to stop by Queenstown Vertigo Bikes are awesome!

http://www.vertigobikes.co.nz/

In April I booked onto their Heli-Biking trip however it was too windy for the chopper to land so it got cancelled  Sad

The heli-biking was booked for the last day I was in Queenstown so Instead I did their 'Gondola Downhill Tour' which was 2 runs of the DH track on a Giant Glory, it was a blast Grin The guide was also really cool.

If I was going to Queenstown again I wouldn't bother with the Gondola DH, it was great fun but I think the other 2 trips (Heli-Biking or Skippers Canyon) would allow you to take in more of the beautiful views...

I spent quite a few days in Nelson on the North tip of the South Island and am certain there would be some nice biking there! The city was surrounded by hills and there were a couple of nice bike shops although I don't know anything about renting bikes in Nelson.

Cheers guys, had a look at our planned route and Queenstown isn't actually that much of a diversion for us so we've now built it into our travel plan. Thanks for that info about Vertigo Bikes Pete. Excatly what I was looking for dude. Looks fantastic and I'm itching to get out there now!  Grin Grin

I did a bit of MTB in Nelson, if you are there shop around I hired a giant HT, which was not great.  Some shops hire out FS.  There is plenty of Downhill in Nelson too.  Don't forget Rotarua.  Best place in NZ so they say.  Also outside Wellington check out Middle & Little Hutt.

Check out the local NZ mtb magazine www.spokemagazine.co.nz

Have a good holiday.  I loved NZ.  Such a great place and teh summer beers are great too.
