ENDURA STRAMASH FREERIDE FESTIVAL LINES UP TO TAKE OFF THIS SEPTEMBER

A brand new event will be hitting the Scottish Borders this year on 19th and 20th September. The event is set up in a spectator-friendly format and involves a sensational day of Slopestyle competition, culminating in a floodlit grand finale followed by a day of Enduro riding on the famous trails of Glentress.

Endura ‘Stramash’ is a rider-built and operated event that aims to become a solid showpiece for the UK’s premier MTB destination, Glentress Forest A Stramash is a  Scottish word for a disturbance, racket, or clash and spectators and participants can expect a loud and lively event that will test every sinew and present a real challenge to competitors.

The organisers have confirmed Endura, the Scottish based biking apparel outfit have taken headline sponsorship of this year’s inaugural event. They are followed onboard by Monster Energy Drink, taking on title ownership of the Slopestyle.

The event has also confirmed attendance in the Slopestyle of local hero and YouTube sensation Danny Macaskill, who will be pitting his wits on the specially built features. Also lining up to ride is Lance McDermott, who was recently injured but is confident of a return to form for Stramash.

With classes for youth, women, amateurs and elite riders, the Monster Slopestyle is as much about nurturing Freeride talent as it is about providing an exhibition event for this stunning visual sport. Alongside Macaskill and other top riders who will attend the event to compete in the floodlit finale, the field will also include riders who will have trained in Stramash’s “Lessons in Flight,” with specially arranged Slopestyle courses taking place in July, August and September 2009.

It’s not just about Slopestyle though. The Enduro will give a large cross section of bikers the opportunity get involved too, with the ability to ride the famous Glentress trails in a format that rewards the all-round rider. The idea is to reach the top of Glentress’ famous singletrack descents within your time limit and then race the clock back down in timed special stages. All participants will have all day to set their fastest times and battle for immortality as the fastest rider on the best trails in the country.

The event is being organised by ‘The Clan’, Scotland’s cycle stunt team and Detail Events, the guys behind the famous Rat Race urban adventures and a company renowned for innovating cult classic event formats.

Manager of Scotland’s Clan stunt team, Iain Withers is one of the organisers: “The Tweed Valley is the UK’s premier destination for mountain biking and the 7stanes trails centres are now world famous. Endura Stramash is all about celebrating that rich diversity of biking in the region and we are aiming to create a real signature event that the community can get behind. Stramash will be visually stunning and we are really investing in the course build and riding talent to ensure the competition is top flight. Throughout the build up to the event The Clan will also be on hand to mentor amateur riders towards their first freeride comp.”

With support from the Forestry Commission, Scottish Enterprise Borders and sponsorship confirmed from Scotland’s very own biking apparel aficionados Endura plus the Monster crew, the event is shaping up to become an annual fixture within the national biking calendar. Working on a development plan over 5 years, it is envisaged that Stramash will become the signature event for the Tweed Valley and grow into a major festival of Freeride taking inspiration from Whistler’s beloved Crankworx event.

Entry is now open for both the Monster Slopestyle and Enduro and the first “Lessons in Flight” courses begin in July. To enter or to get the full information on this innovative new event, go to www.stramash.com.

Yeah you think? well judging by the state of the freeride park at GT yesterday that seems to be a lot of hot air, and the big wall ride STILL isn't even open yet! You would have thought that with such a highly publicised and important event for GT that the FC would have put some money into at least resurfacing the freeride area, as it sits just now the lips on the tables are diabolical and the landings are puncture city, with lots of sharp rocks sticking out right where u wanna place your front wheel, and the berms...well they are just a pile of dirt at the end of a straight now, they ain't any help for cornering whatsoever!

i agree the park at gt is now shit no one looks after it, the closed wallride is a joke, the state of the bottom wallrides are dire, the whole parks needs redone with bigger tables, gap jumps, doubles, more north shore and bigger drops etc, but this would probably be a health and safety issue so will never happen!!!

There is a local there i usually speak to that is essentially fighting a tit for tat guerilla battle with the forestry comission over it ie the FC put down some logs he and his mates got a quad to pull them clear, FC put down more stuff and gravel they built the gravel into a kicker to launch over the logs and branches. Now there is a pretty much a whole tree across it now and on sunday he was saying hes just waiting to get a hold of mates chainsaw to cut it into sections to be moved.

The rumour i heard on sunday was that the FC are thinking about  putting the start of the wall ride section closer to the wall so people dont have enough speed to go luanching over the top Tongue

is that the reason its closed cause people launch of the top?Huh?  that's crazy you must have to be seriously out of control to do that and if that's the case then you shouldn't be riding it in the first place, if they open it again they'll probably ban people from jumping of the side of them, the whole place is ruined by health and safety, imagine what they the forestry commission would say about the boneyard at whislter!!!!!

Its not the FC fault, its our corrupted governments, and apparently they are closed because they are waiting for a timber review (maybe they are too slippery in the wet)

I love hearing all these stories about the wallride, especially since I know most of them are bulls**t.

What you've got to remember, is there's only 3 FC guys who are dedicated to mountainbiking in the tweed valley, and between them, they have to maintain all the trails, carry out weekly trail inspections, deal with management, help with volunteer groups, check car parking, assist with accidents, make sure all the paperwork is done for all that, and numerous other things.
Unfortunetly building new or modifying trails is no longer as simple as just doing it. There is currently a ban on any new trail construction, but for what they can do, they've got to provide plans, justify why they're wanting to do it, get approval, plan it into the budget, then find time to actually do it.
The wall ride is currently caught up in that bureaucracy.
However, the selfish idiots that keep opening the wallride are not doing anybody any favours, as it's wasting the FCs time having to continually block it, and is doing nothing to appease management. There are managers who would quite happily see the wallride flattened, and it's only due to the determination of the mtb guys within the FC that it still remains standing, with a solution being worked on so that it can remain, and be reopened.

Why is all this happening then MC, is mtb within the FC falling apart? do they not want a part of out sport anymore? Why is there a ban?

what was the point of building it in the first place if managers want it down, surely that was a massive waste of time and money, as for riding it in the wet i have hit it several times in the wet and its fine, it should be up to each individual as a rider to decide whether or not to use it not the fc. and more to the point they should have spent the time and money developing more difficult trails. whenever they do build new bits they seem  pretty pointless like the bits near the end of the red run. how come dh trails can be built at ae and inners but not gt?Huh?? they have the terrain for it
