Your mtb history

I recently saw a similar thread on another forum which made for interesting reading (to me at least) and thought, although we are here for the common Commie cause, it would be interesting to see how you all got started.
Here is mine:
'85 - hear about mtbing, then start riding offroad on my BMX (couldn't afford a new bike at the time)
'86 - get a Raleigh Maverick - with 5 gears, steel rim and side pull brake combo for total wet weather lack of braking!
'89 - Dawes Ascent - bit too big a frame but it was cromoly, 15 index gears, alloys rims and canti's.
'90 - Fisher Celerity - this bike I still have, hence the 'oldfisher' username - over a period of time (about 3 years) it got deore low profile cant's, original Gripshift, Flexstem, Flite saddle, etc, etc.
'93 - Fisher Supercalibre ('91 model) - then over the next 2 or 3 years added Manitou 2 forks, various bar and bar end combos (last ones being Club Roost and Onza), lighter front rim to balance the forks weight out. X-lite stuff and other titanium bits and bobs.
Also had a couple of 'commuter' mtb's around '92 - '96 - Firstly a Giant Stonebreaker which was rubbish! Then a '93 Marin Bobcat Trail which lives on as a mate's bike.
'96 - nigh on killed by a errant motorist. My riding stops as I concentrate on new things like learning to walk again!
Don't ride till mid-08. My kids are hooked on bikes and it re-lights the fire in me. Supercalibre dugout and huge crack in headtube shows it to be dead. Celerity in need of parts, lots of parts, so look to get riding by buying an entry level mtb.
Dec '08 - Commencal Normal - with added Wellgo Mg1's - arrives.
'09 - Still riding the Normal and plan to singlespeed the Celerity at some stage this year.

2005 - Kona Kikapu
2008 - Commencal Combi (my current pride and joy!)

Not many really as the first two bikes both lasted me a decade or more each:
late 1980's something - 1996 Raliegh Discovery. Started with Shimano 200GS gears, cantilever brakes rigid forks and old style headset. Finished with XT gears, V Brakes, Aheadset and Rockshox Quadra suspension forks as it was upgraded constantly through my school and early Uni days. The parts ended up far too good for the frame they were bolted to! My dad still uses this bike quite regularly!!
1996 - present - Voodoo Hoodoo frame, 21st birthday present, built up with the old parts again but with a RS Judy fork constantly upgraded and currently sporting slick tyres rigid pace carbon forks, narrow handlebar and is current project to turn into a commuter bike. Can't bear to part with it as it was a birthday present and is such a good little steel frame (was one of the first Joe Murray designed Voodoo's and one of the very first imported into the UK - frame number 37!)
2003 - 2007 - Marin Rock Springs full susser - never got on with this bike at alll and fell out of regular biking for a while!
2007 - present - Commencal Meta 55.1
2008 - present - Commencal Flame Titanium hardtail. This is likely the last bike I will ever own. I can't see any need for another as this really is the perfect bike!!

2006 - Specialized Rockhopper disc. Frustrating bike with crap brakes. Forever fixing it.

doh, we had that bike listing thread already. imo would be more interesting to read more than jsut what bikes people had. it doesn't really tell how dedicated/passionable/what ever some have been during theyr time with or without mountainbikes does it? Some have more money to buy bikes than others depending on different things and situations...
My bike history is short only 3 mtbikes but I'm (I tell myself) more dedicated than most so I'm dissin all the poeple who had all these cool bikes and am still bitter I didn't have (my parents didn't give me) money to buy those v-brakes
when they arrived into the scene and I always had problems with my f*cking rimbrakes(what ever they were called) and my bike was heavier since older guys had aluminum frames
and by the time my frame got too small for me so it was time to quit since I'd never get all that fancy new stuff plus a new frame. damn. besides, smoking, drinking and skateboarding started to look more interesting suddenly. Yep, those damn skateboarders.. it's a sport of evil!!! Was still dreaming of a bike though but then arrived the crazy ass grip shifts and all the bikes had those stupid ass grip shifts I though there's no reason to buy a bike I don't want to have anything to do with that stuff. Where is mtbing going man? luckily (most) people came steady after a few years and I also saw affordable suspensoin forks looking like they might actually work. My bike hunger grew but still doing stupid stuff was more tempting. until little bit over two years back all of a sudden I just went out one day and bought myself a nice secondhand Felt hardtail with BB5 mech discs, coil fork and XT gear. Since that day I been called a bike maniac by my friends. Blew me away...
oh got a little lost there sorry... so when I was 10 I used to spend time in the woods with my rigid steel rig. Still have it in the cellar. Had almost 15 years time off and now happy (happier than ever really) owner of a Meta.
So if you still didn't get it I'm dedicated like a motherf*cker and all those bikes you list doesn't mean a sh*t! (just being jealous if you still didn't get it...)

Ive had bikes for as long as i can remember and have always been on rides, all throughout my childhood i spent most of my time on bikes, messing around building jumps, and using it as transport everywhere, living in the country it was very useful.
When i was old enough i got a paper round and rode a couple of miles every day and saved up enough money to buy a slightly used full suspension bike, which i rode from probably the age of 15 to 18, it was a barracuda overload, weighed a ton n was rubbish.
In 2006 i saw the Athertons and others do the bridgnorth downtown race, the first race of its kind in the uk, and it made me realise i wanted to ride more, around the same time my friend got a rockhopper and the difference between that n the bike i was riding juts proved to me that i needed to get a new bike.
I spent a long time researching which bike to get and saved up from a job in a computer shop and with £300 from my parents for my 18th birthday i bought an 08 combi disc pretty soon after it was released, which is in the process of being upgraded with new parts using my left over student loan

Well I was brought up by BMX riding, and dad was an avid tourer round France and Italy. Got in to mountain biking when I was about 8 or 9 I think. My friend who was a lot older than me at that time got an Orange something or other and I wanted it badly, I also wanted a Specialized Hardrock or a GT because I loved the early 90's paint jobs, yellow and blue splatter from what I can remember of the GT!
First MTB- A Raleigh Manta, the colour was iridescent blaze, which to you and me was a deep pink. It was a guys bike before you say!
2nd - Raleigh M-Trax, some blue colour and put my first suspension forks on it, Rock Shox Judy's.
3rd - Coyote Dual. Full custom build as I was working at the time. IRC Kujo tyres, Mavic 521's, Judy's, Azonic bar, 24seven stem, DMR Chainguide, saddle and V12 pedals, Shimano drivetrain. I loved it.
4th - 24Seven DH. The heaviest bike I have ever ridden. It must have been around 50lbs plus, but actually rode really well and had great cornering characteristics.
5th and present - 07 Commencal Absolut 1, with Sunline V2 bars, Sunline V1 Stem and V1 Ti Saddle, Syncros Seatpost, Larson TT Rear - High Roller front, Crank Bros 50 50xx pedals. So much more to be changed.
New DH bike in the future when I have the funds!
