Well guys as the title shows, how dedicated to biking are u really?how much has it taken over your life?

I ask this because as of yesterday im now single and living on my own again, partly due to my commitment to biking.
My relationship with my gf (of 4years) has lately been a bit on the rocks, and yesterday she came up with an ultimatum for me, either i put my biking aside and we spend more quality time together or she leaves! Well needless to say intially i laughed, but when i realised she was serious i said she may aswell start packing cos there was noway in hell i was making that mistake again (that is why i gave up racing when i was 18,cos of a girl) infact i even gave her a hand packing,so she is now gone and my bikes are still here,i then spent the rest of my evening ...yep u guessed it... out on my bike! So now when i say i eat sleep and live bikes i can really back that up!! Next stop a new job in the bike industry!

So tell any stories u have about ure dedication to biking or stupid decisions u have made because of it.

Bong,

Sorry to hear about the relationship, but if anyone gives an ultimatum, they aren't someone I want to be with.
My gf, soon to be wife, has a better bike than me! Guess you know why we are still together. For other reasons as well.
Good luck with the job hunt and better luck with the REAL hunt!

Better that than being with someone you'll end up resenting!

If my hub asked me to choose ... It would be biking all the way hun!  He knows nowt about my impending new bike purchase and won't know about it until I bring it home! LOL

So I reckon I'm pretty dedicated to biking .... That, or I've got a deathwish ... Grin

I think my ex-girlfriend got a bit sick of trying to fit in time together around my riding.  It was difficult 'cause I spent two hours a day commuting to work and normally one if not both days at the weekend.  Ho hum, it is a laugh though.

I think a girlfriend might be cheaper though, this biking lark costs me a fortune. Cheesy

I started biking 2 years ago and it is the only thing i like that involves exercise. I need a release from the droll of day to day life. My mrs is tops and is quite patient with the biking lark. I'm looking to go to whistler in 2011 so I have yet to test her to the limit.

I've been fortunate in my career as I have managed ( don't ask how ) to rock climb, whitewater kayak, skateboard, snowboard, surf and mountain bike with some of the best in the world ( though I don't rate myself at all ).

One thing I have learnt, is that for those that live and breathe their sport, they have to have 'time off' to do 'normal stuff'. It is the work hard-party hard mentality. But the work element is what the rest of us would consider to be a hobby.

And also I have seen plenty of people make their hobby a career....some have loved it and won't ever stop. Some however have crashed and burned. The reality of many jobs, whatever industry is that you spend the same amount of time sitting behind a computer, you just have a more agreeable subject matter to work with.

Personally I will never live to work...and I will never wear a suit to work....I also have to feel passionate about my work.

However, in some of the industries I have worked in, I have lived and breathed a sport for so long that the last thing you want to do in you spare time is actually do that sport.

It is all about balance  Grin

p.s. I now have a job where I get to take pictures with some of the best in the world  Grin

Indeed they do ....  He does the golf thing ... which I have no interest in at all!!!   So he does his thing and I do mine and never the twain does meet!  Grin

Bong, feel for you mate but anyone prepared to make an ultimatum like that has to be prepared for the consequences.  Sounds like it wasn't a difficult decision for you.  I'm not as committed to riding as you obviously are but don't know what I would do if the gf gave me one of those.  Fortunately it's not gonna happen.  She's happy to see me disappear off on the bike... (xcept this weekend it's tiling & grouting  Sad)

Tim, agree with everything you've said.  Balance is the key and if you're lucky (sounds like you're the lucky git this time Smiley )you can get there.  For about 6 years in the 90's I used to work very hard as an outdoor pursuits instructor.  Found I did much less climbing in my (limited) free time.  Just didn't feel lke it.  Became a 'Civil Servant'.  Not everyone's cup of tea but decent pension, leave and Flexi time... +1 for the balance. I chose my first and most obvious passion as my profession so I want to and will keep other passions as hobbys. But what I actually feel deep down I'm a biker. Was surprised when I did a little search to myself to find out it's not my used-to-be-the-biggest-thing presently-profession thing. I mean biking at it's most elemental level. it's connected to many things: feeling of freedom, practical freedom (to move not depended on any transportation, I HATE to burn gasolin and I HATE to sit in a slow mo f*cking bus), healthiness, adrenalin, seeing places, being ecological, friends... the list goes on. If you were asked a question what was the one and only thing you'd be doing if you had to choose kind of thing. so I guess I'm kinda dedicated nowadays. Practically it can be bad as well. I'm not worrying about spending all my money on biking but I'm spending too much time dreaming of biking and hanging in the internet and you're not helping me at all.

What comes to my girlfriend I got her into biking as well so it's all good. Actually thanks to her I started mountainbiking again after many years when she took me to a DH day in Thailand just for fun). I can go with my friends or we can go together and I enjoy biking with her even though I might have to wait a little down the hill Wink I wish she will also own a Meta one day so she'll get that confidence boost that bike brings! She's a tough girls though and learning fast Shocked

Bong I also feel for you man but to be honest I think no-one should never give an ultimatum to anybody. I wish you all the best to find your way to the bike industry!!!

Should have told her that it wouldn't be a problem, but she has to give up buying shoes, or handbags!!!

Seriously, relationships shouldn't be built on that. If she was unhappy about the time you spend biking then a compromise should be suggested, not an ultimatum.

Hang in there fella  Cool
