5050s are apparently OK provided you don't get the basic ones.

However, they're made by crank bros.
So they'll last about 2minutes before falling apart, and rattling endlessly.

I'm afraid but I must disagree with you, mc.
I've been abusing of a pair of 5050s XX for about 6 months now, been hitting roots, dirt, rocks and bone to the point of snapping some pins off the pedal and they run as smooth as new! The bearings roll smooth and without any slack... and still no maintenance done (and I'm on the 187pound league  Grin )
But hey, that's just my experience.

I rode SPDs for a couple years riding XC but last year moved in to jumps, freeride, and a bit of DH and along with it switched to flats and I've never looked back.  I used some V8s for a few months as they were a cheap introduction but soon realised they weren't enough platform for my size 12 feet, nor were the providing enough grip.  Last autumn I invested in some Straitline SC Platform pedals and combined with some fiveten they are absolutely awesome.  No they ain't cheap, but if anything happens to them (I don't expect it to, they're built to last) I'll replace them instantly.
