Evening all,

Does anybody have any experience of mountain biking in Malaysia? I've just booked up to go out for the F1 GP in early April and have a week after to get some sight seeing in. Gonna be based around Kuala Lumpur so thought a couple of days on the bike might be an option but can't seem to find too much info on the net. I know there are places like Borneo but they may be too far afield for what I'm after. If not, any non-biking ideas would be gladly received (especially the more adventerous type).

Cheers boys and gals,

Stu

hI smoggy,

you lucky thing having a trip to kl. I lived there for nearly 4 years from 2000 to xmas 2003 and another year in 96/97 for work.

its a great place however i did not do any mountain biking whilst there.

i did see a thread some time ago - maybe in the who, where what bike - or users bikes.
there was a club called 'weredefakawi' or someting like that.

in my experience i reckon there would be millions of places to ride in the jungle etc.

be warned the temperatures are crippling at 32 dgrees c as a minimum and 90% humidity - i used to play footie and it was only from 5-7 in the evening as before that time it was too hot - though definately a bit cooler in the shade of the jungle if u end up going to routes like that.

a great idea might be to get to cameron highlands - maybe an hour or two drive from kl and a lot cooler due to altitude - plenty of nature reserve type trips available - though not sure how they deal with mountain bikes. maybe genting resort where they have the casino -since gambling is illegal in malaysia yet they still alow a casino suggests they may not be too bothered if your blasting around on a bike?

in kl itself i am struggling to think of places that may be appropriate for riding - like i say i did not do any biking over there?

general terrain off the roads could be good but jungle should really be avoided as it is too thick and dense - maybe attach a couple of machetes / parangs - to your axles and see what happens Grin

also the wildlife can be a bit mental - mosquitoes, leeches are the worst but then of course you have man eating tigers and pythons - and zillions of poisonous snakes and tarantulas. nice. and if you have an accident dont expect a lot of immediate help from the emergency services. be prepared for the worst and be very well insured.

on that note - prepared nature trails in places like the cameron highlands are probably your best bet.

hope that helps

ian

I used to work on F1, and one of the events I did was Malaysia.  It's an incredibly fit person who can cycle in those conditions - extreme heat and extreme humidity.  Put it this way, you'll shower and put clean clothes on, and within 30 seconds of leaving the hotel the clothes will be stuck to your body.  Not to mention the number of human-eating insects and animals.

I wouldn't do it.  The risks of getting stuck somewhere on your own, with no medical backup and crawly things sucking your blood is too high.

I would suggest this lot will be your best bet.

the hashers are all a bit mad but friendly and will know all the jungle trails for their runs - its good to see them doing mountain bike hashes.

they will be very helpful and seems they are still in existence. definately your best bet for info

WTF you gonna have the biking time of your life man!

Leave the fear of snakes and mosquiuituies (OMG!) behind. anywhere you go around equator you gonna be wet right after showe anywayr it's just like that. Go blast down some local hills and get some adrenalin of the tigers!! Hook up with some guys like mentioned above and hey it's just a place where people live in it's not like you gonna die. Have fun I wish I could go!

I agree,

you will have a great time (so long as u aint eaten by a tiger or snake Grin)

you have more chance of being struck by lightning - but in malaysia this is also a serious threat. Grin

i was just offering friendly advice regarding the threat of malaria and comas induced by heat exhaustion, snake bites from cobras and other nasties.
I saw a lot of snakes in the most unsuspecting of places - i know several were vipers which are all poisonous.

you will enjoy the whole malaysia experience - just be careful - ignorance is deadly in strange environments Wink

cheers

Sure.
It's good to know things and not be stupid and friendly advise is always something to be thankful of. What I ment was as long as you're with locals they know. They always know better than some-one else even if he was a doctor. And be aware of doctors trying to sell you Malaria medicine cos they're always grased by med. companys!!! Ask locals first before you eat some stuff that costs fortunes and make you feel sick...

I think the best thing is that riding in a totally different environment is a great experience and a lot of fun!

I thought a bit of riding out there might not be as easy as I initially hoped  Huh? I've never been eaten by a snake before tho (and they say ya gotta try everything at least once) Lips Sealed

I've found a place on this webnetty thing called Putrajaya Challenge Park thanks to COC's own Melbangi (cheers fella) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJbs1hP6bRk . Looks good fun but don't think it's worth dragging my rig half way accross the earth to ride. Looks like i'll be doing sightseeing mainly (after the GP). Any recommendations?

HI MATE,

for sightseeing in kl you have a few things to do - have a wander up the telecom tower in the city centre. its very high with awesome views.

then there is the petronas towers - just damn impressive stood under them. you can go up to the bridge link if u want?

also petaling street or 'china town' market. sells all the fake kit. worth alook if u fancy some dodgy watches and tees.

after the gp they have parties in town centre - each team has a bar/club rented out with special things like dancers and stuff. i rmember beach club was pretty good.

also try 'bangsar' area about 20mins by cab from the city centre. some nice little bars and restaurants and stuff. try - finnegans - ask for frank the irsih manager and ask im if he remebers me - ian the geordie lad from about 2003 he should remember.
also try  Ronnie Q bar - an expat watering hole - i spent wat too much time in there.

if its the ladies you are after then beach club and near by bars are probably the best.

watch out for 'lady boys' - they are everywhere. golden rule - if they have a canny pair of jugs then it suggests cosmetic surgery - this in turn suggests  they also own a knob.?? Lips Sealed
(asian women as rule do not have big breasts)

also watch out for the bloody mopeds on the roads - i came a cropper one day and had a rib broken - i was lucky i wasnt killed by the twat.

have a good un
