I don't want to sound too much like a weight weenie here, I was pondering ditching my hardtail frame and getting a Super 4 frame next year, the hardtail is a bit brutal for long distances and I want something to ride on marathon races next year.

I then spotted both Real and Merlin flogging off cheap XL Combi S bikes, after selling the wheels, fork, brakes and my old frame I'd almost break even. The rear shock is one area that's a bit awkward but I'm sure I could scout out a Float R or something later in the year.

Wasn't the old Meta 4 frame roughly the same weight as a Meta 5 (07)? ie around the 8 pounds mark on the scales, ~7.3 pounds claimed? Has anyone tried weighing an old Meta 4 frame just out of interest?

If the weight is only around a pound different I might consider it, any more and I guess it's probably worth getting the Super. The hardtail is kitted with an XT wheelset, Rebas, carbon bits, Thomson seatpost and stem, XT/SLX groupset so it should make quite a respectable build.

I just bought one of these today, $995, couldn't pass that up.  Seems like a reasonable deal for frame only, a steal for complete bike.  The combi uses the same rear end and linkage as the Meta 4X, which goes for $1400 frame only.

The shop guys took the fork, cranks, bb, f der and shifter back towards a 130mm Fox 32 float RLC.  I robbed my XC singlespeed which I never ride of it's choice bits.  Set up like this:

08 Commencal Combi S, size L, rockshox bar 2.1
08 Fox 32 Float RLC.
Protapers, AC stem, king headset.
Hone cranks, RF 34t ring, LG-1 guide w/taco, wellgo MG-52 pedals.
Avid Juicy 3's, 6" rotors.
X5 shifter, X7 der, sram chain, boat anchor SRAM cogs.
boat anchor SDG seat and chingchong commencal post and qr.
Front wheel: 32h Rhyno Lite, handbuilt DT 14g, specialized skraxle hub
Stock rear wheel: Commencal chingchong rim, crap white spokes, deore hub.
2.35" kevlar Larsen TTs, f&r with light tubes.

Weighed in at 31 lbs.   I think it can get under 30 pretty easily.  It has tankish seat, post, stem rear wheel and cogs.  Thomson stem, post, dkg clamp, and XT cogs are going on order, and I'm putting a light FSA road seat on.  I'm going to keep my eyes open for a used float RL or RLC.  I am extremely tempted to order hope hubs and Syncros DP25 rims, but I think I'll hold off on that for awhile.

I guess that didn't really answer your question.  But it builds up light.  I can't imagine the frame weight is too different than the Meta 4X.  4X has the adjustable headtube, which adds weight, but a more compact front triangle, which should be a wash.

Forgot to mention, with a 130mm fork it sits at 67 deg head angle, 14" bb, 16.75 chainstay.  SHRED READY.

You have quite a bit lighter and XCish parts list than me.  I am not sure that the frames geometry is ideal for that type of build.  As I said it uses the same rear end as the 4X bike.  It has two sets of drops, 10mm qr and 12mm thru axle.

I think it is better suited as an all-mountain, downhiller's trailbike, light freeride, whatever you call it, than as an XC bike.

The small Combi, s/m Meta 4X and medium Combi, L/XL 4X have essentially the same geometry, except for seat angle and seattube length, which really doesn't effect the way the bike rides when you are shredding anyway.
Head angle, wheelbase, toptube, chainstay, bb drop are all the same or within a few millimeters.

The frame is the exact frame that was used on the old Meta 4 in 2006 and 2007, the Meta 4 is a short travel trail/XC bike Huh?

Did you not wonder why the standard fork is 100mm?

http://www.togoparts.com/items/view_item.php?iid=6014&did=0&cid=6&bid=0

Look familiar? "Designed for 4" travel front and rear"

Going by the official Commencal site, "Frame: 2007 Meta 4".

I am aware that it comes with a 100mm fork.  That was the first thing to come off, ha.

It has pretty much the same geometry as the 4X bike, the same rear end, same linkage and 12mm thru axle drops.  That doesn't seem too XC to me?  I thought XC bikes tended to have steeper head angles and higher bbs?  And are not built to send big gaps?

I dunno, I'm in the states, Commencal is a gravity brand here.  Do they have people XC racing this frame?

I can tell you it feels good wiith a 130mm fork, 28" bars and a 70mm stem.

Commencal are a bit of a gravity brand, which is why their trail bikes have slacker geometry than most. The dropouts are replacable meaning any frame can use bolt through axles, you get a set of each dropout with the bike.

Check the '08 Meta 4.1 on the Commencal website for example, 100mm travel, Deus X bits, 17mm rims, Larsen tyres, sounding DH?  Tongue

Also have a look at the review of the Super 4.1 at the side in the downloads section, that's the new version of the Meta 4 for this year, 25lbs all in, SID race forks.

I'm sure it'd be alright using a longer fork on it, I can't see anything on their website saying you shouldn't. I'm fairly certain that's not what that specfic frame was made for though.
