well, finally my supreme is done.  Grin i'm not sure how much it weighs as it weighed 15.5kgs today on a crappy weight, but that can't be right. anyway, i'm really happy with how it turned out and it feels just about right now. the only thing i'm not totally happy with is the weight of the frame itself, but oh well - i can live with that for now  Wink Grin Wink

specs:
- 05 commencal supreme fr frame with manitou evolver isx6 shock
- 08 fox talas rc2 (huge props to my good friend mr aaby for helping me with that one! )
- 07 mavic crossmax sx wheels
- 07 schwalbe big betty 2.4 triple compound
- 06 x0 shifters and rear d /shimano deore up front
- 06 formula oro k24 brakes with 8''/7'' discs
- 07 xtr 970 crank with e13 32 bash
- 07 shimano dx flat pedals
- titec scooper seat post (heavy as hell)
- selle italia slr xp(?) seat (getting used to it by now)
- commencal lock on gripshifts and
- thomson elite stem

yeah, that's more or less it it. two of the photos is with my last "build", that is while i was waiting on the new wheels and tires. as you can see i had some crossmax xl tires on it with hutchinson spider 2.3 tires (which the schwalbe beats any day of the week). personally i think the xl's look better on the bike than the sx's, but the latter is the better pair of wheels so they'll stay on. the same goes for the bash for now, though i might have to get a 36 ring up front later on.

all in all i think the supreme fr is a sweet bike and while it's somewhat heavy it's still loads of fun, especially as it doesn't feel heavy at all on the trails. i'm starting to prefer the slacker headangle, but i'm contemplating changing the head tube insert to the neutral 67 degrees one as the 68 is just a little bit too steep and the 66 a little too slack for my liking. i dunno, i used to prefer the steep one, bu after using the slack one for a few trips i've come to quite like it as an all round setting (as it's a foregone conclusion that it works best on the downhills). for now i'll keep it as it is, but i might decide the weight is not worth it and drop a kg by committing sacrilege and acquiring a santa cruz nomad frame. and in the contest between a meta 666 and supreme minidh/fr frame i'll choose this frame every day of the week, even with the extra weight  Wink gotta love a supreme. as you can see from the build and to some extent the photos, i'm using this bike ad an all around all mountain bike with an emphasis on fun downhills. also, it might be fun to see how much abuse the xtr crank can take. don't do big drops yet, so it fits my riding style as it is, even if it's perhaps a bit more hard core than what it was designed for. oh well, details  Wink

time for some photos eh?

last build:

current build: (new wheels and tires and e13 bash, that's it) not totally happy with these photos, better will hopefully follow

Lovely bike, lovely build, more or less the same as my Supreme6.

I know what you mean about frame weight though, I love the frame but really hate the weight, I keep getting tempted to swop the frame over to the 666 I've got sitting in the store, but I resist. I'm pretty big and heavy and I like my bikes slack, therefore I know the Supreme ticks all the boxes for me, it's just 2lb too heavy! But hey, nothing else rides like it.

Now, what bike for the Scottish trip? Meta5 for GT, Supreme for Inners?

Decisions decisions.

yeah, thanks for the compliments. great minds think alike eh  Wink hehe

i'm really hoping they can cut some weight on the new model as i wanna stay with commencal and their lovely single pivots, but if the nw model is the same or heavier the temptation for a lighter frame will just be too great i think. Where i usually ride it it's pretty much straight uphill to the top (steepish), then all downhill from there (no lift access). A kilo in difference uphill is a lot, while on the downhills it doesn't really matter that much. I just think it's a pity that it weighs bang on a kilo more than the nomad which is a similar bike (i was literally jawdropingly shocked when i discovered the nomad was kilo lighter). Sure, i could build it lighter than what i have now, but i think this kinda bike needs this kinda build, especially as wheels and tires go. An all mountain rig needs to be able to take some serious abuse, but it should be lighter than 15kg with this kinda build. oh well, it feels lighter than 15 riding on it so i'm not complaining here.. or, i kinda am Wink hehe.

i'm just wondering how much weight they could cut if the build "quality" (meaning thinner tubes and so on) was higher like the sc. The supreme frame is really great and it's just a pity that it should be limited to being mainly used as a lift accessible minidh rig with a 180mm freeride build weighing in at 16-19kgs.

and yes, i'm a 175cms weighing in at 63kgs so i'm not the biggest of riders. Wink

Ride a Nomad and yopu might think differently, so just feel very twangy, the Surpeme feels rock solid.

Light = Twangy
Rock solid = Heavy

Sad, but true.

it's all about being fit. I ride my supreme xc my mate rides a meta and I smoke him up as well as down. I'm only 68kg, never use size as an excuse!  Wink

No no no, I'm 16st, and am really slow up the hills on my Supreme*, it's not cus I'm unfit, I'm super fit me, it's cus the bike and me weigh lots. Really, it is.

*I've as slow up hill on the Meta, but I''ve other reasons for that, it's erm, wind resistance.

you misunderstood me. what i meant was that i'm light so a lighter frame could probably take the abuse i put on it, not that i'm too puny to ride the damn thing uphill Wink hehe. one usually gets used to the weight of the bike to some degree and i think it feels ok on the steep uphills, but it's def harder going than my cannondale prophet weighing in at 12.5ish (i'm selling the prophet by the way, hehe). but harder going means better excercise in the extent that that is a goal in itself. who rides to work out? don't we all do it cause it's fun? hehe

besides, steep uphills is pretty much all we got here and i do not like to push the bike uphill, so i always ride it. one gets used to it and it gets easier every time.

right now i'm in agony as i have to get up at 0500 or earlier tomorrow to get on a plane. waaaay to earliy. oh well, the reward is that i get to see muse! woho

Dope build..

How are you liking the Big Bettys? Considering them for my new build, are they durable?

oh, i love em (muuuuch better than the hutch spiders i had on before), but they haven't seen that much use so i don't know about the durability of em. i would def recommend them though. a little bit heavy, but they feel really nice and they stick well to the ground. the gg version is even better in terms of grip, but i chose these as they work better on concrete ( i have a lot of uphills on concrete) and these have plenty good enough grip i think.

i wouldn't worry about em falling apart. scwhalbe makes killer tires. if they're too heavy go for the nobby nics. nice tires as well. i'm putting them on my 5.5 incher i think, though the weight save is the only motivation over the bb's. we'll see.

thanks for the props and good luck on the build of your own

Yeah, the bike park in my area is rough on tires(think rock gardens from hell) and I didn't wanna drop the loot for scwhalbe's (as they're expensive here in the USA) and have a rip after a couple runs..  With that being the Big Betty's are actually on the lighter side of the UST/heavy-duty/Tubeless DH tire spectrum..

yeah, i know, but i'm more than usually concerned about weight Wink the trails i usually ride are really rocky as well, so i wouldn't worry about it. best tires i've ever had. the tpc hold up better than the gg i believe, but aren't as grippy.
