Has anyone use the style of bike rack that attaches to a 4x4 spare wheel?
I'm thinking of getting one but wonder if the weight of 2 bikes is a bit too much stress on the bolts?
I saw a site somewhere that said max load of 60lb or so... which is 2 bikes obviously... but if that's the max it's a bit close to bone everytime. Then again the max may have a huge safety margain anyway (i.e. REALLY it can take far more, they're just being cautious)

So any expereince/advice welcomed. Cheers.

a mate of mine's just looking at bike racks for his freelander, he decided against the wheel mount rack because of the strain on the hinges... apparently they're not that strong

he's going for a removable tow-bar rack i think

Hmmm... kinda what I thought. Trouble is I don't have a tow bar and it'a a looooong way up for a short arse like me to get them on the roof... but it may be my only option.

I took the plunge & bought a thule towbar mounted rack this year (for a trip to the alps) & can only say that its absolutely fantastic..easy to fit, easy to get bikes on/off & perfectly safe at speed. i think mbr did a feature on similar one in last couple of months & gave it either 9 or10.
def worth the outlay  Smiley
