Went out last night and got caught in the dark with no lights in the middle of some woods. Thought I was in front middle chain ring and middle on the back. Flicked up through my rear mech to the top cog and everything went tight. Looked down and saw my hanger dangling there. Shat!! I was in big front ring wasn't I. Bent the mech, snapped the hanger and bent my swing arm.

Stupid mistake. Now converting to 12mm so drove to Hope this morning for a conversion kit. LBS said I should have had bolt with the frame when it came. I didn't get one. Is this right?

How much are new swingarms?

Do you think its safe to bend back?

Ouch. Not seen one that bad before! Personally I wouldn't try to bend that back as it seems likely to leave at least stress risers.

If your going to bolt thru your gonna need to get an axle sorted so one won't come with the hub, so I'd get one made that is a few mm's too long then use a big bolt with a bigger washer on the effected end. This will spread the load and should be fine.

BTW- What bolt with the frame are you on about, I'm confused on that one!

Mine has done the same after the crappy chain broke!! (08 meta xt)  I was told that it was not under warranty :-(

It looks like this is happening quite regularly, how did you get a new swing arm under warranty?  I paid £60 to get my bike running again after the chain broke and only recently noticed the bent swingarm which has annoyed me.

Not sure really to honest Steve. I don't know a great deal about the 12mm/20mm type fixings and don't think i've seen one before. The mechanic at my LBS said that frames usually come with 12mm dropouts come with the bolt aswell or something. Huh? So he said my frame should have come with the 12mm bolt to go with the dropouts.

Cheers.

He be talking bollox then!

What he most likely means is frames that have bolt thru rear dropouts will also come with the axle. Commies just come with optional bolt thru drop outs, not the axles.

As well as the rear hub adaptors you'll need to get a axle with end bolts. Ebay is a good place for this.

Thanks for that. Is there any chance of posting a link for the bolt as I can't seem to find one.

Also where would be the best place (speedy delivery wise) to get one other than ebay.

Cheers.
