Anyone had one of these on the back and a high roller on the front?

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=17338

What are they like grip wise?

Combination good or bad?

Used a 2.5 60a High Roller, and 2.35 ST Larsen on the hardtail- nice combo.

Only really used it in the summer but was good, and coped fine in the light mud that was around.

Yep.  2.35 High Roller up front, 2.25(?) TT on back.  Bit quicker than 2 High Rollers, reasonably grippy, but not fantastic in mud or loose gravel.  For general trail centre/XC use I found them pretty good.  I've just put an Ardent on the back and I find that rolls as quickly, but has a wee bit more grip.

hmm these seem like the perfect solution for my absolut, the kenda k-rads just dont offer much in the way of grip at all,and when the ground is rough or wet forget about it,lol. i might pick up a pair of these me thinks  Grin

Oh damo try minion dh's,i have a pair of super tacky and they are wicked, the grip is endless!! soooo impressed compared to my original high rollers.

Cheers for the replies chaps. Wink

I currently run HR dual ply wire bead tyres. I am dogger at climbing so I'm wanting something with a bit less rolling resistance. I love the rollers for grip and I was talking to the dude from Commencal at the weekend at Llandegla. He said that my tyres defo need changing hence the question. I'm going to change the front for a single ply HR but wanted to know what the Larsen TT's are actually like.

Bong, what are the minions like compared to the HR's for drag?

hmm, well to be honest im a bit of a gravity junkie,so i dont do too much of cycling uphill,i will walk if i can lol,so i cant say much bout them that way,if i was to say anything i reckon that they are worse for drag, but mind i have gone from 60a compund to super tackys,so there would be a diff anyways, but in my opinion the extra grip is sooooo worth it  man,i totally didnt get along with the stock high rollers.

I'd say the minion DHF has less drag than a highroller - also works well as a rear (unless really wet). I'd ride a DHF front and rear if only they were a tad lighter.

I've got a Highroller/Larsen TT combo on the hardtail just now.

Perfect combo for my usual rides. Back end does lose grip on muddy bits, but it drifts nice :-)
Just make sure you avoid wet tree roots though  Roll Eyes

Kenda SB8 work well as that sort of rear too if your riding smooth and dry trails. Also Shwalbe racing ralphs are very fast and light but have a decent bite (the new ones since 08) and at least have some side knobs.

I have a 2.35 HR on the front and a 2.35 Minion on the back both are light kevlar.

They both do a good job in varying conditions, deep mud, clay, dry cinder, mulch, roots, large stones and that's just five minutes of riding around in Thorndon at the moment. The only thing I would be tempted with would to put a minion on the front if it gets even more wet.

The minion does seem like an option but it is dual ply which means it'll be heavier? Rolling weight is what kills me uphill. I'm not right bothered about out and out mud grip coz as soon as I see mud I avoid it, lol. I want my HR grip but light? Hard to please I know.

I think I'm going to try (more bloody tyres in the quest for perfection  Roll Eyes) a single ply HR up front and a single ply TT Larsen on the back. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Cheers chaps

That seems pretty light for a Minion. You sure 'bout that ?

Both 2.35 foldables listed under 'Specs' page as1.8lbs (about 815g).
Even the 2.35 ignitors come up heavier than 600g at 1.7lbs (about 770g).

Hi Steve,

You're right there the cells must have been confused.

When a 2.35 minion  kevlar was weighed during a test it came out at 778g
