Hi all,
I've been busy tinkering completing my Retro XC bike.
I noticed with the Sale fever in the shops at the mo there were commencal specials, so I made an enquiry and got a very very very good quote on what I'm expecting to be a Absolut VIP 4x 2009 model in black with Thomson seat post included. So got me in the mood for upgrading the bike again.
I did a load of research on geometry and other bike/frame options, digging through pinkbike site and various reviews.
The one alternative that stands out is a Giant STP, a real bargain as i can ride home a whole bike to upgrade for under £300 in the sale, I believe the frame only is £295 anyway if ya can get it. pretty impressive, great geometry, (almost identical to Absolut 4x and weighing in at 4.7lbs, which inspires confidence as its a StreetTrailsPark bike. Great review everywhere, the hard core lot have snapped a few but happy with replacements
Today I took my Dr Jekyll XL with its 13.5 bb height and had a test ride at EBC on a Long 2008 STP 1 (£286) RRP £385 it was basic spec with rigids, felt more like regular MTB but manualable, still chuckable, quite nice quite versatile and quite good really. It had a 12.25 BB height so felt a lot different
Then I had a go on a short Absolut GC Single speed Yeah too small for me, but this was a £600 bike, BB was even lower under 12" which was wierd despite longer forks, but as daft as it sounds, It could be the plush and super squidgy Dirt Jumper 3 forks, but the Commencal Absolute CG felt magic!

I know I cant put my finger on it! but it just felt lively and fun and light!
So a very unfair test there, I made it even unfairer and got on my dependable old tank 32ish lb SS along with chain lock £900 Identiti and cycled home!
so still no wiser

why am I back? thought Id share my findings for any one interested, and cos the Absolut 4x is so rare noone else seems to be able to comment on it! so I might well order either the STP or the Ab 4x or stay put! lolz
The STP would be better than todays test on nice shocks and wheels etc, would the 4x be too fragile for general all round use? lite street blasting (compared to the hardcore regular riders), general riding, playful XC light freeriding, and of course blasting the BMX track for fun.
Also I heard the Commencal 4x is made at the Kenisis factory which is encouraging.
Oh I dunno. Any constructive comments welcome. 8-)
