You're probably right to dismiss the Pikes if you are after a sub 28 lb build.  They're good forks but about 12oz heavier than the standard Float 140's.  Manitou's may be an option ...

Even with discounted 08 bits I would imagine getting down to 28lbs is going to be spendy.  My 08 VIP 55 has the 454 Pikes, Deus post, bars & stem, SDG Ti saddle. 540 pedals and DT 5.1 wheels. Everything else is XT.  It's 31 lbs.

A lighter wheelset (719's on Hope hubs for example) would save 8 or 9 oz but at a cost.
Lighter forks could save 12 - 16 oz.

Good luck with the project.  Please let us know what you use and how it turns out  Smiley

A meta 5 it is to be. I'm building it up to my own spec but one thing I failed to take note of is the stock bike's bar / stem sizing. I realise it's somewhat a personal preference but what's the stock bike's set up. ie stem length/ rise & bar rise?

Thanks for all the info & advice. The end result is a Meta 5 VIP with;

Fork: Fox Float 32 RLC
Wheelset: Mavic XM 719's on Hope Pro 2's
Brakes: Formula Oro K24
Shifters: SRAM X9
Rear mech: SRAM X9
Front mech: Shimano XT
Chainset: Shimano XT Hollowtech II
Cassette: Shimano XT
Chain: SRAM PC 971
Seatpost & bars: Easton EA50
Stem: FSA Gravity Gap 75mm
Saddle: SDG Bel air
Cables: Gore Ride on sealed
Grips: Raceface lock on
Skewers: Mavic
Tyres: Spesh Enduro Pro 2.3" front & Kenda Nevegal 2.35"rear

I'm only one ride in but have to say it rides superbly, climbs like a goat & descends confidently. I've still to get the air pressures properly dialled in and the brakes are not yet fully bedded but already I'm hooked. Weight wise it's 28 - 29 ish on the (dodgy) bathroom scales whereas the outgoing '03 Enduro weighs in around 30 - 31 in comparison. I had to compromise a little on some of the finishing kit but all the important bits are specc'd as I wished.
