Lower back ache can be caused by a variety of things.

Back pack too loose, causing it to bounce about on your back on rough stuff.

Saddle just a bit too high, causing you hips to sway slightly when pedalling.

Lack of core body strength (I've got to do sit-ups/ab crunches reguarly to prevent lower back ache, as I do a lot of manual work my back muscles are far stronger, which creates an imbalance that only becomes apparent when pushing hard on the bike)

Bike set-up, but bike set-up is more of a personal thing. I've ridden bikes with long top tubes/long stems, and suffered just as badly with back ache as I do with a short top tube/short stem.

As regards to trying different set-ups, try borrowing bits of mates.
There are some general guidelines for bike set-up, but they should only be used a basic starting point.
