Has anyone here ever registered their bike with someone like bikeregister.com in case its stolen?
My son recently had his bike nicked by 'the lads' in the park and it got me thinking whether I should do think of registering mine or even his after the event.
Alegedly the police and dealers look at this register to check if a bike is on the stolen list.

His bike was a Specialized but even so we'd still like it back (although I get the feeling he's already got his sights set on a new bike).

Mine's registered with bikeregister since I got it a month ago.  Not expensive when you consider that it's a one off payment.  Not sure how much of a deterrent it is, which reminds me, must get round to applying the marker...

Is the Datatag service still running? I used it on my old bike.. anyone had any experience of trying to track a bike with it?

Bikeregister also offer a Datatag service. Costs about £20.  They put you on the register, send you a permanent marker kit to mark up your bike, and a microchip and some epoxy to glue it into your frame somewhere.

It looks like a bit of a pain to put somewhere out of the way unless you put it somewhere simple like the bars or headtube

The microchip is just like a pet one - reall tiny  You can't track your frame with it though.  It's only any use if the Police recover the bike.  Supposedly they can scan your frame & look you up on Bikeregister.

Still not done mine yet...

Yup, agree.  Was surprised when I read their suggestion that you put it there, unless you have one for the bars as well...

I've had a look down the seat tube & head tube on my meta to see if you could get it into the frame from there, but the holes into the frame from those locations are pretty small.

Will be an interesting task fitting it.

BB housing should have enough room for one, also on the wishbone linkage you could pop one in behind a bearing as there is a fair amount of room there and also not the first place to look!

What gets me about bikeregister.com, is that you've got to pay to register.

And then, it's only ever going to be any use if somebody happens to check your frame number on that site.
Up until a couple months ago, I never even knew it existed, even though bikeregister.com has apparently existed since before 2001, so it's not as though your registration fee is being used to raise awareness.
Instead it would appear the fees are just being used to help pad out the pockets of the parent company.

So who exactly is going to check any frame/bike they've bought, when chances are most people don't even know about the site?

I'm not promoting them or anything and I don't know if they're an effective service or not.
Personally  I decided that it was worth paying for (it's not vastly expensive unless you change bikes a lot).
I should stress that I have no connection with them - I'm just putting across another view.
So...

What gets me about bikeregister.com, is that you've got to pay to register.

Of course you do. It's a business and they're in it to make money.

And then, it's only ever going to be any use if somebody happens to check your frame number on that site.

But at least it's there so someone can check.

Up until a couple months ago, I never even knew it existed, even though bikeregister.com has apparently existed since before 2001, so it's not as though your registration fee is being used to raise awareness.

To some extent it is.  They do advertise in the mags.  If they didn't then nobody would know about them and they would be out of business.  I first saw their ad about 3 years ago and again more recently  -  having said that I can't find it now  so perhaps it's not as effective as it could be!

So who exactly is going to check any frame/bike they've bought, when chances are most people don't even know about the site?

Hopefully the Police if they ever recover the bike.  I live in Hope (well, near it anyway... Smiley ).
