Hey all, my first time posting here. Bought a new '08 5.5.2 a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately decided to make the move to clipless pedals at the same time.

So I'm now wearing a cast, with a suspected scaphoid fracture. Going for a repeat X-Ray next Thursday to see if it's broken (scaphoid fractures are notorious for not showing on X-Ray for about 2 weeks after apparently). If it is, I'll be wearing this cast for a further 3 months. Pretty...unhappy...about the whole thing. Especially seeing as it was one of those stupid clipless newbie falls where you stop and can't unclip in time and topple over.

So my question is this: Anybody on here broken this before? How would I know if it's broken or not? Any pointers? Should I take it as a good indication that it stopped hurting after a few days (bearing in mind it's immobilized by the cast)? I'm absolutely amazed that I could have broken a bone after such a minor fall.

P.S. Loved the bike for the whole week I got to ride it. I'm pretty new to the sport, and the Meta is my first "proper" MTB so I was amazed at the difference it made to my riding. Going clipless was a big help too (until they lulled me into a false sense of security before trying to kill me anyway).

Hi

I did my scaphoid on my right wrist. They couldn't see it even after 2 weeks!

turned out it was broken when i had the cast off 6 weeks later, how annoying would it be if it wasn't!

Just like yourself, it felt fine after a couple of days.

Stick with the clips though!

@ jlr01
Not quite the reassuring story I wanted but thanks for replying. How did you manage to break it? You only had to wear the cast for 6 weeks? Is this the normal time? I was told 12 weeks  Cry

@Whatsit
They were backed all the way off. Was turning around slowly in a narrow road and it went suddenly. Didn't have time to unclip.

Ah, I apologise, not the schoolboy error I'd assumed, you have my condolences. Get well soon 'n' all that.

And next time practise on a field for god's sake  Wink

Was it A&E that told you 12 weeks?

It was 8 weeks in total, then a bit longer with a wrist support.

The good news is it felt pretty good very quickly after having the cast off, I was riding DH in a couple of weeks. I used one of these

good luck on Thursday!

I broke mine when hit by a car on a t junction Cry. In cast for 8 weeks with a bit of stifness after. Aparantly it's the most common bone to break in sports like biking, skateboarding etc Initial pain is like a dull ache. However it felt like less cos I also broke my collar bone and ribs at the same time Embarrassed. I was riding a GT at the time and that came off unharmed!!. I think everyone does that fall when first moving to clipless. My stepson is just about to try them, so going over the local football field to get used to them before hitting the trails (hindsight eh!). Best thing to do is not fight it and just let it mend, otherwise the wrist will be weak and hurt in the future.

Just a thought,
Are you using single (SH-51), or multi (SH-56) release cleats? Assuming you use shimano.
Personally i don't like the multi-release kind because they release if you haul up on them, but they are easier to get out of in a hurry!
I use the single release cleats, they very rarely let go! Even when you want them too......
Like yourself, the only time I've come off because of the clips was coming to a stop! my mate almost pissed himself laughing!

It was the doctor that said 12 weeks, or surgery to pin it and then a cast for 6 weeks. I'd be tempted if the surgery saves half the time. Gone back to college too last year so the Summer is my only chance to save a little money to pay my fees etc. It's like the saying, if I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all  Grin

Spent ages cycling around the lawn with them first, practicing clipping in and out. Had even done a few light rides around the lakes here. And then fell off turning around on an 8 foot wide trail about 30 seconds from home. Ah well!

@jlr01
There's no link at "these" in your second last post. I'll admit, even if it's not broken (and I've an awful suspicion it is) this has shaken my confidence on clipless. Might go back to flatties for a while.

@jlr01
Thanks. I'll have to order one of those. Going to wait and see what the verdict is on Thursday first though as I may not need it for a while  Sad Going to get a pair of those multi release cleats too. Granted I won't be able to bunnyhop as easily (lazily), but I also won't run the risk of, say, breaking something while I'm learning.

@themossman
Yes, hindsight is wonderful. All part of the learning process I suppose.

Went back, got the cast off and got it x-rayed again this morning. The verdict...I'm not broken! Or at least my wrist isn't. My consultant is going to get an x-ray specialist to look at it just in case but he said that if I don't hear from him within a couple of days I can assume it's fine. Fingers crossed. Got a splint for a while now so gonna take it easy and not rush it. Still painful if tweaked so I reckon I tore a ligament or tendon. Thanks again for your suggestion jlr01, ordered one of those wrist supports for when I get back on (and a pair of multi-release cleats  Embarrassed ).
