Mini DH variations
«

Hi all, while looking for a mini dh I have been offered a 2006 bike that the owner claims to be better than the current bike - is this just him trying to sell me his bike over someone else's, or are there actually any significant differences that make one better than the other?
What changes have been made to the mini dh over the last few years?
Also, I've been chopping and changing my mind between meta 666 and mini dh for a while now. I've recently bought a meta 4x which has swung me more towards a mini dh as the two meta's might be too similar.
The bike will be used for a bit of freeriding/downhill/and more adventurous trail riding, which do you reckon is going to be best - I'm starting to get myself v.confused!!
Cheers

To confuse things even further I have thought about waiting for the 09 bikes - but they seem to be getting even more similar (in terms of geometry)!!

First off...what is the spec of this amazing 06 bike?
Does it have 08 kit on it, or is the seller claiming that kit that is two years old is as good as brand new shiny stuff?
I had a VIP MiniDH last year and now ride a VIP 666.....two ends of the 'All Mountain' Spectrum! If you are mainly doing trails with plenty of ups, but like going hell for leather on the downs then the 666 is sweet. If you plan on lots of downhilling with trips to the Alps, but like peddaling to the tops ( but you are not in a hurry ), then the MiniDH is sweet.
However you can make a MiniDH in a light build...and a 666 in a burly build....
The geometry is quite different, the Mini is more DH biased definately.
Hope that helps

I have an 08 mini dh1,and personally i wouldnt choose any other bike over it cos it rocks man. it feels planted like a full on dh rig when you are taking it down the trails but it is possible to pedal back up on it(i personally havent done this much because i use that section to recover from going hell for leather down the hill) but its still nimble enough to mess around on at jumps etc.

Mini DH all the way. And frame wise there is no difference in ride between all the previous incarnations of the Supreme 6 / Mini DH.
Mine was ridden all around Spain, uphill, downhill, trail riding. I've been riding it almost exclusively for most of this year and I take it on all the rides I'd normally take my Meta5. It goes uphill just as well, just not as quick but on the downs it's just like a full on DH.

And i'd hazard a guess that the newer versions are lighter, as there is one curved top tube, instead of about half a dozen, all connected with big fat welds.

Tim - I prob sit between those two situations you describe annoyingly!! You do have a valid point with regard to parts - I was hoping to find a frame only ideally anyway though. The point he made just made me question whether or not there had been any changes (as I tought they were all the same).
The rest of you - I think you are making me lean towards a mini dh now!!!

Hi Rich,
I've replied to your PM - my two I'm selling; the VIP is a Supreme 6 and the newer is a Mini-DH.
Ultimately though, everything is idential bar slight frame build and weld differences - they all ride identically. Both have the head angle thingy to alter steepness, and both use the same shocks...
Only difference is spec on whole bikes, and what shock you get with it. As it is I have a top dollar DT Swiss air shock that will be sold with them.

A MiniDH frameset built up with some lightweight ( but strong ) kit is an awesome machine.
Being totally honest, if I had to build up a bike right now on a budget I would find an 07 MiniDH VIP frame ( simply because I love that colourway ) and build it up with XT/XTR kit, Sunline stem, bars, thomson post, SDG titanium seat, e13 DRS, DT1750's and some Marz 66's up front.
Either beast will not leave you wanting

I'm gonna be selling mine soon, or now if you want it.
The above is it with it's standard wheels and my lightweight jobbies, it'll be sold with the standard (white) wheels. It'll be sold with the DHXair installed or a new Manitou 4 way coil.
Size is large/xl.
I'll do a spec list if interested.

Rich if i was you i'd bite steves hand off man, thats a sweet bike and i'll bet that its been maintained well too,if you go for the air shock option it is specced exactly to the use you aim for it to be,top shelf components(performance wise) and looks the mutts nutts with the halo rims too.

Steve - that bike looks pretty much perfect to me, only problem is I'm looking for a S/M rather than the bigger frame - that's pretty gutting!

Have u actually sat on both the frames mate and compared them? when i got my bike i was searching high and low for the small/medium and it took me ages to get it,and once i got it i put it alongside my mates large/xL bike and we took like 15mins to even find the differences in the frames, the only difference we could find was the bit of the seat tube above the whole for the shock to pass through(and even this was a tiny diff,we are talking less than 1inch) ans the top tube was meant to be longer but it doesnt look it when they are side by side or when you are on the bike.
So dont completely right off the option of steves bike just because of that man,i honestly reckon you wouldnt notice the difference when on the trails.
