Hello chaps (and chapesses!) first post, please be kind! Grin
Right, I'm not actually in the club yet....... But I'm in the market for a biggish bike- Hence the 666
Question, guy in shop says it wont pedal too well as its more freeride orientated... Now i think that's a bit harsh myself (he says having never pedalled one!) So question is, the Meta 666 owners on here how do you find your bike in the real world?
I know it can be built around the 30- 35 lb mark, so it ain't too heavy. The shock has propedal IIRC? so that's going to help, and in a shop sit and bounce test it felt considerably more 'right' than another big name 6" bike that's not been long out...
I'm a big fella, (too much beer!) so want the all mountain burliness that comes from the adj. head angle, 20mm bolt thro' etc...

Had my 666 about 3 months now. Wanted a bike capable of handling the Alps and the odd uplift day but the majority of riding I do is XC on the Chilterns where I live.

The bike is more than capable of being riden all day and if you get the build right you can make it around 31/32 lbs. Mine's about 32lbs and it hasn't got especially light parts (no carbon stuff and just an XT groupset). Stick some low resistance tyres on it and it'll fly along. Never gonna go up hills like a 25lb machine but is perfectly capable and will go down the hills alot quicker!!!

Top post as i'm in the same boat, I've got a 25lb hardtail for singletrack blasting duties and want something 'bigger' for the fun stuff. Many people say the 5.5 but heart still says 666. Question is, where's the best deal and is there much / any stock around?

Buy one they are great!!

I love mine. Ive been running it with downhill tyres (Swamp things and High rollers) and it did feel like I was pullling a plough. I recently changed the tyres to maxis advantage XC though because im doing the Meridia mountain bike marathon on Sunday (75Km) and the transformation is amazing. It pedals extremely well even without the pro pedal on. The tyres still take a load of abuse too. I use mine mainly for XC type stuff but I do downhill on it too and it takes it all in its stride. I have a mate that races downhill on a Big Hit and he reckons that there is not much (if anything) in the UK that would phase the meta 6. Its a sweet handling bike that inspires loads of confidence on the downhills and pedals up them very well. The guy in the shop clearly doesnt know what he is on about. I dont know if there are still any demo bikes about but try to find one and have a blast, you wont be disappointed.

I think they look the dogs too.

Thanks peeps! Grin

Looking good for the 666 then! Good to hear it pedals well for a burly bike, I never expected it to go up like a 25lb racebike. Saying that I ain't no race whippet!

Hmm, think my mind is made up! Now I've just got to find a good deal and see if there are any test rides available.

Sounds exactly the dilemma i had.  With stock tyres, which are ace (maxxis high roller 2.35), it's a bit sluggish on flat stuff.  Also find it's a bit slow on twisting singletrack but point it down a hill and it's gone.  Ideal second bike to a hardtail imo.

Yep...I've been running a 666 since it was release last year, the set-up definately makes a difference to this bike. You can make it as lightweight or as burly as you like!

And if it wasn't designed for peddaling why would it have a triple chainset as stock?

Get one!

Get one, give me chance! Grin
Looking on the Merlin site, some good deals to be had there. Just got to work out costing for a custom build/ standard, or even wait for the 2009 version...
If I buy mid October, should the new ones be available then?
Like I said, the other bike (Remedy 9) that I had originally set my heart on, just didn't seem that nice in the flesh... bars were a bit narrow and the paint scheme I wasn't overly keen on (tart! Grin) But looking and bouncing on the 666 it just felt 'better' I cant actually say why either, a gut feeling I suppose?
Plust knowing the size having sat on one, means I can shop around for a good deal!

Another plug for the 666. Shop guy doesn't know tihs. Had mine for 6 months and find it's pretty hard to fault except maybe stand over height could be better. It pedals as well as you could expect any 6" travel bike to pedal. I never use the propedal. Suspension provides heaps of traction and feels bottomless on drops. Your choice of wheels and tyres will dictate how heavy it feels. I'm running dt swiss ex 5.1d rims and maxxis 2.35 high rollers with kevlar beads and I think strength to weight and performance it's a good combo.

Here's hoping it does go uphill fairly well as I have just bought one. Tried out my mates 5.5.1 in the Alps and liked it but just fancied a bit more travel. Merlin have them reduced from 2799 and an extra 10% off at the moment so it works out at £1710 - massive discount so can't see them lasting long at that price.
