What do you get when you combine a European World Champion bike brand and one of North America’s best ski resorts? A world class downhill and freeride bike destination, of course! This week Angel Fire Resort and Commencal USA announced plans to jointly promote the expansion of the resort’s bike park.
Angel Fire, voted #1 for 2008 in a recent online poll ranking winter sports terrain at North American resorts, has big plans to duplicate its winter success by expanding its lift serviced mountain park for downhill cyclists. Stunts, jumps, drops, wicked lava fields and easy cruisers make Angel Fire a natural location for mountain bike riders of all experience levels.
Commencal, one of Europe's biggest bike brands, became involved in the development of the mountain through the efforts of Bicycle Technologies International (BTI), its US distribution partner. Commencal USA's two year partnership with the resort, announced today, includes sponsorship of the trail building crew, trail signage and a joint advertising program. Additionally Commencal USA will name several of the new trails currently under development.
“Angel Fire has a reputation for having some of the most challenging terrain in the US.” Says Commencal USA’s Mike Raney. “We are excited to be a part of Angel Fire’s trail expansion plan”
Angel Fire has already made a name for itself as a venue for pro level racing. It was the home of the 2005 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. It is also home to the 20 year old Chile Challenge, part of Mountain States Cup series. Angel Fire is discussing a pro-level extreme skills event for this Fall – though details are not available at this time.
Commencal USA and Angel fire plan a soft launch this summer. A major advertising push will begin in Spring of 2009, with Commencal USA and the resort kicking off a campaign to jointly promote the park destination to eager downhill cyclists.
Angel Fire’s Bike Park is currently operating this summer with lift access serving 20 trails. The Chile Pepper, a full service slope-side bike shop, is offering Commencal bikes for daily rental use by Angel Fire visitors. There are also a variety of routes to explore in the Carson National Forest surrounding the resort (Eliot Barker and the semi legendary South Boundary) so the fun never ends.
