My company are running the cycle scheme again so I am thinking of taking advantage of it for getting a bike for bashing the trails. I'm thinking of a custom build meta5 but I am thinking of putting large adjustable forks on it so I have the option of getting a bit more travel out of the front when on rougher descents.

Has anyone put Lyrik U-turns on a Meta5? What do you think? Otherwise I would probably think about pikes 'cos I love them on my Absolut 4x.

I think big forks void the warranty on the meta. It's really suited to a 5in fork and it works great.

I borrowed Neil's XC build Meta (5in Fox Vanillas) and went on a DH day with him on his Supreme. It was insanely good fun and never felt under-travelled.

dont think i'd want to run anything bigger tbh. fox talas 36 maybe but they're super expensive and have lots to go wrong. my personal favourite would be the vans 32, fit and forget. you could consider the RS pikes as your doing a custom build, another good option.

I run All Mountain SL's on my meta. When they die I will probably change them to 55's.
They run quite happily at 160mm albeit with a fair bit of sag

Thanks for the advice so far. Sounds like the vote is firmly for 5 inches. Please still post if you do have Lyriks or similar and tell me what you think.

I'm sure Steveb sticks some Fox TALAS on his when he heads out to Spain etc, but you'll need to wait on his advice I guess.  I run Pikes {95 to 140mm} and they seem ideally suited to what I do.  Going to Morzine next weekend so might have a different view after that.   Having said that I can't afford an alternative so Pikes it is for me!!

I am going to sign up for the Mega Avalanche next year and everyone thinks the ideal weapon is a 5 or 6 inch travel bike. I was planning on using this new Meta 5. All stories of Alps on a meta 5 welcome. (I'd usually take my Patriot)

I use 36 Talas's on my Meta 5.5.  Can't ercommend them enough.  Also considered Lyriks but the u-turns are coils and pretty heavy and the 2-step can't be set at the right height for general trail work (it's either fully extended or down at 115mm).

The 160mm on the front when descending feels great and well balanced with the rear.  Would definitely go for a big adjustable fork for the Mega.

personally, I would leave it 5" and light, it's an all mountain bike after all. I used to ride my mindh with 36vanrc2 for everything and to be honest, my meta with 32 Float is just as quick on everything bar proper DH and probably quicker on some stuff because it accelerates better. If you leave it 5" you'll learn to ride better as well.

Similar dillema for me ,had fox 36 talas ordered for meta 5 but told that Mojo sold out Embarrassed as new 09 forks coming soon, even more big bucks see the link

Am told they can convert 36 R 160mm to 150 mm seems like a good compromise still within Warranty a bit more travel not so insane for climbing although you can shift body weight to compensate,on the 160 mm having not rode at 160mm cant comment.  But is it worth it should i just go for the standard fox 36 R 160.

have coil u-turn lyrik_advantages are increased resistance to twisting forces either due to braking or trail impact due to larger dia. stanchions and 20mm bolt thru. weught not really an issue esp. if using good strong but not over heavy wheel (hope pro2 w/ stans flow rim) + u-turn means that you can set axle to crown height within a range...set within whatever limits you decide be it 140mm travel or not...coil is super action + you get full travel
