How do?

I've never been entirely convinced by the stock Float 140s on my 2008 Meta 5, and I reckon after months of procrastination I might actually get round to doing something about it.  They're really light, but not all that stiff and I don't reckon they do justice to the rest of the bike.  The obvious alternative is Pikes, although some opinions on whether coil, dual air or air u-turn are better would be useful.  I fancy Talas 36s, but they're either a bit (warranty voiding) long at 160 or pointlessly short at 130, Lyriks are overkill and 55s weigh the same as 2 goats and will stop working after a fortnight.  Magura Thos look perfect (apart from being white), but that would involve me waiting, which I'm not especially good at Sad.

So, what does the collective COC wisdom suggest?

Think I read this on SingletrackWorld too?  but anyway I've Pikes 426 on mine, and they are ideal!   Can wind down the travel for any nasty climbs and 140mm seems ideal for the descents I do.   Heading to the Alps in few weeks so should find out if they are enough out there!    Nice and cheap too, not sure about Magura but Fox are over-priced IMO.

Got Pike 454 Dual Airs on mine. Perfect for 90% of stuff, but on steep stuff (was at blandford a few weeks back), they just arent as good as the back end which feels like its got 7inches of travel sometimes. Even with  rebound on fast the forks seemd to pack down. Wished I had 160mm at that point for the front.

So if your looking to swap and ride steep Id go for something with a travel adjust option up to 160mm. Otherwise pike dual airs seem superb.

If u can hold on just a little longer Fox are bringing out  the 32 float R in a 15mm bolt thru.Should be lighter smoother & stiffer.

I went for the two goats option, and stuck a set of 55 etas on mine.
Two months on and I haven't had any probs!!!
The adjustable travel works really well, and they handle big hits with ease.
To be honest I ummed and arrhed a lot about getting them after they were recommended by the bloke in the shop (as opposed to Fox or Pikes), but I'm really happy with them. Smiley

I've got the same dilemma, currently have Fox 32rl and want something with a 20mm axle for stiffness. Pikes are the obvious choice but what about Manitou Minutes or even Nixon's, lighter than Pikes and just as stiff....
As for the Fox/Shimano 15mm axle, one word, why??? I suppose it will save you a couple of grams but if you want them, you've got to buy a new wheel.... Nice bit of marketing strategy that....

I think you'll find ur still gonna need a new front wheel if u want a 20mm bolt thru fork ;)That is unless you've got proII hubs that can be changed from QR -20mm bolt thru Grin

no mate, I've got a mindh, I'll just pinch the wheel off that  Grin
I think most people will be running 20mm forks on meta's soon if they're not already, QR doesn't do the rest of the bike justice. I don't know why anyone would want QR on anything other than pure xc bikes to be honest...

I agree that Fox deserve to be punished for bringing out another standard, so I'll not be having one of those.  I'm still not 100% convinced about Manitou's reliability.  Some folk have no problems at all, some have a complete nightmare with them and knowing my luck I've got a pretty good idea which one I'd be.
Looks like the frontrunners are Pike - great fork, reliable, but a bit heavy, Talas 36 - again good, but slightly mismatched travel and expensive, or Magura Thor - looks perfect on paper, but unproven and expensive.  Decisions, decisions....

If you can wait a while Marz are bringing out a 44 which is 100- 140mm adj and is supposed to be the lightest of that size of fork. http://seaotter.mtbr.com/2008/04/17/marzocchi-44-ata-micro-2009-fork/
I think I read somewhere else that it would have a 20mm axle as well
