Hi just joined today and need a bit of a nudge to make my mind up I'm after a new frame I've found a meta 5.53 at lbs for £900 so i thought i could strip it down and sell all the bits was thinking i might get £300-£400?? for them so I'd have £500-£600 in the frame or do i just wait and spend £900 of my hard earned cash on a 08 5.5 VIP frame what do u think?

the 07 offering is still a great frame, even if the new offering is stiffer in the rear and can take more cycles. you just need to decide if saving some dough or get the latest and greatest is the more important. it's your choice.

just remeber, the current offering won a bike of the decade award. there's no going wrong here. it also depends whether or not you're in the lower or higher end of the frame size as the seat tube angle was redesigned so taller users wouldn't sit so much to the back over the rear wheel. if you're in the lower, save the bucks and get the current offering, if you're in the higher - is the redesign worth the 400 pounds extra? as a pennysaving weightweenie i would go for the former and get a better build kit for the extra money. the extra money in the build kit makes for a larger difference than getting the newer frame i would think, without having tried the new one.

hope this was some help.

well, the 07 offering and further on has floats that are customed tuned to the meta frames and prob work excellently. a float r also has a propedal setting, one just cannot adjust it like on a rp2/23. the added bonus of a rp2/23 is that you also get a virtual lockout too, or it get's stiffer in the rear at least if you usa a lot of propedal. it also has the option of totally removing the platform which makes for a more active rear end on the downhills. also, the shock prob get a little better from year to year and it has some new design features.

i used to have a meta 5.40 - though with a significantly better fork, but sold it so i could go snowboarding in colorado. had a rp3 to spare and asked the guy who bought the meta from me if he wanted to buy it to upgrade the bike, but he thought the float r worked quite satisfactorily, so declined the offer. his float was not custom tuned like this years. so while the frame is more adjustable with a rp23, i'm not sure if you need it. hopefully someone with more experience with the meta will give you some tips as well.

oh, another improvement with the new frame is that the front shifter is now situated on the front triangle which should give better shifting since it's not moving all over the place. on the other hand, my supreme has similar front shifting as the current meta and i've never noticed that the shifting leaves anything to be desired.

guess it's two deciding factors here:
- price
- which of the frames you think look the best
-> the choice then is whether or not you think the upgrades are worth the added cost. if no, make sure you won't regret not getting the new one as should've-thinking is no good in hindsight as it might make a good experince a little less so.

If you like going fast downhill then I'd definitely go the older and the tried and tested.
As for the Float R rear shock, the switch is really flimsy and feels like it is going to fall off everytime you change it. The RP32 absolutely rocks and feels much more sturdy.

float r: switch? do you mean the rebound adjuster? there's no lever on it as far as i know. i've never tried the rp23 on trails, put i kinda prefer the old lever of the rp3. full propedal for transportation, light propedal for when the trails get a little bit rougher and open for going downhill.

and yes, i wouldn't be concerned about the new one not being as capable downhill. they designed that rear for the 666 which is meant to be used in even rougher terrains and at higher speeds than the meta 5.5 . both are prob sweet.
