This is my first post, so hi all! I'm thinking of getting a 666 to use as an alpine trail bike/occassional downhill/freeride bike, having ruled out a load of other bikes, it's main competitor is the sc nomad... (will i get smoked for saying that?!)

Does anyone know if you can use the inserts from one of the other bikes to slacken the head angle of the 666 off any more - and is this likely to invalidate my warranty if I did it?

Also, is it worth trying to get an rp23 over an rp2 - what is the difference?

thanks

Yes you can ( a Supreme headsleeve fits perfectly ) and it will invalidate the warranty ( as it is not 'designed' for it ).

And I would suggest an RP23 over an RP2...not sure why, but it feels much plusher on my 666!

Hope that helps

Thanks - did you change the sleeve then? Did this affect the feel of the bike much?

Try running with the standard ( supplied ) slacker setting before considering trying to source a Supreme sleeve...but it does slacken the head angle quite a bit which pushes the bike a little bit further towards the DH part of the All-Mountain spectrum ( if that makes sense )

I've got the latest 666 with the frame mods and believe me you won't need it any slacker than the -5 deg.

Unless you have a 2009 model you have a standard 666....as far as I am aware there have been no mods at all ( and I have one of the first to be released ).

Yeah, I'm a bit confused as well, I didn't think there had been any changes to the 666 yet... do you mean you've been running it on the slackest setting that you can with the sleeves provided?

The batch of frames that turned up a month or so ago have slightly different geometry to previous ones as highlighted when I posted the pictures of the new crap front gear cable route when I built it up.

The bottom of the down tube has been hydraformed and bends towards the rear just before the bb, so therefore the geometry Btw the BB and headtube will be different.

This is a link that shows pictures of the original downtube to bb connection which was a direct gusset into it.

The geom is more or less the same, ALL the 08 666's are within the original tolerances. The slight change to the 2nd batch of 08 frames is a less hydroforming, as it's turning out to be a less controllable method of shaping tubes than good old fashion welding or bending.

One of the mags claimed Commie had changed the geom of the 2nd batch cus they told them too, egos or what! The differences are pretty well documented now in my previous posts, so do a search.

It's worth mentioning that Commie are one of the few companies who make running changes to their frames mid season.  They are still small enough to do this, no string of board meetings to make decisions. Over the years almost all the frames in a particular range are slightly different from the start to the end of the season. Some will see this as good, some will inevitably see it as product development is public. I guess the reason is Commie are still a very young company, who strive to constantly improve their product and are willing to change something as soon as they improve it, opposed to wait til the next season, like the more established manus.

My first frame was not. Not even remotely close to advertised geometry specs. My replacement frame is like the one 100mphplus posted and it is spot on. I'm completely happy with it but the original was way off.

Dogboy, was it a medium?

Iain, the opposite, the swingarm was beefed up a bit. I've ridden both and can't tell the difference though.

Indeed it was. And again I am extremely happy with the replacement.
