Personally I’m really disappointed from Commencal 2009 line, from few reasons.
1. The straight top tube not looks good at all. It seems like there is not enough stand over. All modern bikes today have a bent top tube – why can’t Commencal work properly with hydroforming?
2. Regarding the Meta55 there are no changes at all. Although the frame isn’t light (there are few 6” lighter frames in the market), it tends to brake where the rear shock mounted to the top tube (Medium size frames). After breaking two frames at this point I got a “new” 2007 frame with reinforced support wich looks great. This reinforced support doesn’t exist in 2008 neither in 2009.
3. Cable routing is done beneath the down tube and it’s exposed. Personally I need to replace rear cable every 2 months.

I’m riding Commencal for 2 years now and I think they have an amazing contact system, but the frame isn’t built good enough.

Nice, more than 100 views and not even 1 reply
Because no one here knows me, let me tell you that I love my Meta and I thing it's one of the best trail bike out there, but due to the issues I raised I consider replacing to other manufacture. I don’t see enough evolution and consistence from Commencal. Personally, I had 4 frames, and I saw many others and each one slightly different (I’m comparing same frame sizes)
Guys, if you would like this forum to be strong and effective, it should contain bad things about Commencal as well. If we would like to see here posts from Commencal developers we should raise such posts as well.
I'm attaching photos to better explain the reinforcement I mentioned. I curious, does someone here have these kind of reinforcements? Pay attention, for example, to the fact that there are no welding across the top tube. Although it doesn’t looks good it’s stronger.

Well I don't own a commencal but I am thinking of getting one. What kind of riding do you do? I have done a lot of reading reviews etc and forum threads on the Meta 5 and have never read anyone else having the problem with the frame that you are talking about.

I had the same failure on my 07 meta 5 after 2 weeks riding trail centres.  I upsized to the miniDH and have had no issues since.  I am in the market for a meta 4X but i am a little concern as the frame design in this area appears to be the same as the meta 5.

Eek - I was about to put a deposit down on a Meta 5 but I am starting to worry now.

i see no problem with the top two photos.

The open gussets are to transfer the stress of riding down the toptube, rather than hitting the end of the gusset and stopping. (If you inderstand what i'm trying to say)

I personally have closed gussets on my miniDH, but i'd prefer if they were open gussets, they'll cope with stress and forces better.

I remember an old saying in a MTB magazine, Gussets which have been welded closed are there for show only, the ones which are open are not. i know that that is not true, as closed gussets add astrength, but not as much as the open gussets which you have there.

As for the last photo, that could just be flex in the metal which has caused a crack in the paint. I'd keep an eye on it though.

well, you shouldn't be. Any and all failures of this kind results in a brand new frame and the majority has not had these kinda issues with em.

I wrote a reply the other day but didn't post it. What i said was basically; while i agree that a nicer build quality - in other words more fancy alloys or materials - would be nice, for some people it's not felt to be that big of a loss (search for cannondale and you'll find the post). In regards to your critiscism of the forum, it's not like you are the first who's raised these issues, nor will you be the last. Posting something doesn't necessarily mean one gets any replies, especially if it's a topic that has recently been discussed. As regarding to the stand over height, i  sincerly doubt that the .5cm or so of added soh would amount to much if one bent the top tube other than extra weight. The frame in question is prob a small and the small never had the extra hydroformed bit up towards the seatclamp/seatpost.

Maybe I wasn't clear enough, so let me clarify
The last photo is taken from my previous Meta 2007 frame that was replaced by warranty. This is my second frame that cracked there, and I’ve seen more than 8 frames broken/cracked at the same place (top tube where the rear shock is mounted)
My current Meta 2007 has open guests which, as ANT state, are better than close ones. The issue I’m raising is the fact that theses guests, and some other, doesn’t exists in 2008 neither in 2009.

Like many, I am guessing I did consider a reply to this post, but to be honest it is all a matter of opinion.

Quote
The straight top tube not looks good at all

They have had bent top tubes, now they are going with a straight one....why not? Without sitting on one the effective standover height is a bit of a guessing game.

Quote
Regarding the Meta55 there are no changes at all.

Quote
let me tell you that I love my Meta

There were some big changes in 08....let the design 'settle' before messing with it!

Quote
Cable routing is done beneath the down tube

Yep they do need to have a thin about that one!...but they can't be 'too' perfect can they?

As for this forum being strong and effective....this is still the early days, we are slowly reaching 1000 members and the daily stats are getting better and better...but look at what we are. Are there any other owners club out there? Yeah there is Yetifan I suppose, but what about the other brands? It is testament to Commie that owners actually want to get together in one place. You wouldn't have this forum if it wasn't for not only a brand experience which we all enjoy, but also some cracking times on the trails with some cracking designs.

However, as with all 'fan' sights, users will come here for a positive experience, yes there will be the odd negative posting, and people will step in with helpful advice, but ultimately the positive posts are going to get the users interested. That is the nature of what has been created here.

Just my view though!

Tim

i agree 100% with what the original poster wrote and i must say im very dissapointed with the company (after being a huge fan).
while the bikes work very well (suspension wise mostly) the build quality is very very very poor !!!
ive seen metas explode (in many different places) like they were 50 $ bikes ,while having one of the heaviest frames around.
also , while commencal knew about some of the faults ,i didnt see a recall or a repair for next models.i helped the dealer here sell 2 metas to my friends ,and guess what ,they both broke !
i personaly own a 06' 5.4 (L) and broke the linkage rod and small linkage triangles. after the dealer sent pics to commencal ,they said i jumped to high !!!!!!!!!!!!! when it was actually a 40 cm "drop" (dealers store manager rode with and vouched for it and only then they decided to give me new links - bikes still under warrenty).im waiting 2 months for the links !!!!!!!!! oh ,the manager gave me his links ,but guess what ,they have a crack also !!! (and lets not talk about my main triangle that got a dent when the links broke - no response from commencal on that ! )

my days with this company are numberd ,and thats a real shame !

Sad that some o you have had issues.
I'm still riding my 2006 meta 5.2 and so far no issues. Including running 160mm forks (no warranty left now so no issue) and riding DH courses.
It would be interesting to find out just how many have broken in comparison to how many have been sold.
I bet it is a very small percentage.
