Trials riding....and I mean this hardcore end of the sport, basically hopping around on your rear wheel from rock to rock ( or wall to fence )...

......is it mountain biking??

Granted it is flipping cool, and very impressive, but given that it rarely actually takes place on a mountain these days and the bikes can't actually be ridden properly ( even the most crazy DH bikes can be ridden around a bit of flat singletrack ).

Just wondering what the common view is?

Bikes without seats??? It'll never catch on - just ask Steve Peat about the Worlds last year!

Seriously though, that is nuts!  I'm not sure I could jump those distances without a bike!

Ryan Leech's stuff in Kranked 6 was and still is mind blowing.
And he's a cool guy to meet!

Modern trials to me isn't mountainbiking.
It's good to watch, but it's just not mountainbiking.

If you have to be on a mountain to mountainbike then that rules most of us out most of the time.

I see trials like I see huckers and slopestylers: cool to watch, and it's a refinement of riding skills, respect to them.
But I enjoy watching dh 'cos they'll do a drop at speed and still keep riding. Where I live I have to use trials skills (haha skills my arse!) to get through some of my trails.

In the end it's better than not riding. We're all wierd in some way or another.

had to add this one to the discussion..no mountains in sight, but would be pretty good to have skill levels like this on the UK trails!

I used to ride trials and the bike skills I learnt were great. If you can 360 off a 12ft wall on a rigid bike, then what can you do on a full susser on the mountain!?

Trials has it's place, especially for the kids, but i soon grew board of it. I wouldn't swap the introduction it gave me into mountain biking though.

Riders like Ashton, Eddie Tongue, Chris Atrigg and Ryan Leech do make it a bit more exciting. Aggressive street style trials riding instead of slow hipperty hopperty stuff.
