Hi
Any advide on why I keep bashing my chainring when I hop over logs/rocks on my 55.2 08?

I've been playing with air in the shock and seem to have it set up perfectly now so I'm loathed to add more air, however when I hop over some logs it tends to bash on the largest chainring.  Angry

PS - I'm also a little concerned I'm going to kill myself as this bike makes me feel invincible!!! Wink (out for a few rides this weekend, so this may be my last post!!)

Someone has to say it, don't bash your guard then..!

lol

Sorry, have a look at an E13 bash guard. Quite cheap on CRC.

I'd recommend against  getting a bash guard, you'll lose your big ring.

This however is an interesting read..

The MRP thing is similar to the E13 Taco bash guard
And as for loosing the "big ring", which is more important to you. Clearing the hop /saving your remaining chainrings or leaving on a chainring on that gets.......how much use?

Thanks all. i thought a bash guard would be the answer, but to be honest I always thought they were only for use on downhill bikes with single front chainrings...you live and learn eh!

Will check out CRC for suitable one

Hey here lateral thinking for you: try backing the return damping off on your shocks a little, not too much that your bike bounces around, but a smidgeon (I love the English language), it will give you a few inches more on bunny hops.

I recently have started dually trail riding again (after many years of dh and the budjet ht for singletrack) and I have started using the granny gear, but I only use the big ring when I'm on the road... so to be true to what the bike is for I'd swap the big ring for a bash guard and ride harder where it's fun.

I've got a Black Spire "Big Ring protector"from Chain Reaction.

Apart from the dodgy name  Grin it works well, but is quite a lump even with the C2 plastic version.

I put it on for the alps then took it off to save a bit of weight. Since then, I have lost most of the teeth on the big ring, mainly while riding McMoab at Kiroughtree! I'm going to replace the big ring with a regular bash ring next I think.

What I have found though is that I can clip pedals/rings while climbing (e.g. whytes level at afan) but flipping the pro pedal on really helps stop this by keeping the BB high.

Just out of interest what size middle ring do people use when they have got rid of the big ring and replaced with a bashguard?

I'm running an XT triple ring on my 666 for XC duties but want to replace the big ring with a bashguard when I head off the Morzine in July. Just thinking that my current 32 ring feels a bit small for downhill duties.

On my HT, i'm running 26 36 bash.

You've got to take into account the mech's shifting capability, iirc, you're ok up to a difference of 14 teeth.

A 36 tooth however, is perfect.

I use a 36 alone or a 26/38 if I use both.
